My Bottom Line :
Drinkable but underhopped, this reddish lager focuses on its light caramel and toasted bread flavors in a soft, naturally carbonated mouthfeel.

Further Personal Perceptions :
-A sheet of foam covers the hazy copper.
-Fruity edges recall plums and pomegranates.
-This might be a different offering for Germany, but it feels like most generic Amber or Red Ales brewed in North America.
-The body is plumper than your average session lager.
-The finish really needs some more hop bitterness to create balance.

On tap at the brewpub. Dark brown with a creamy tan head. Sweet caramel aroma followed by sweet molasses and hints of chocolate. On the sweet side, but drinkable.

Tap in Nürnberg, dark red body, chestnutty with a lacing tan head. Malty sweet taste with lots of toffee, here are some nice juniper/heather notes to my taste, light hoppiness. My favorite of those available on my visit, though the ’Schwarz’ was probably its only competition.

On tap at the brewery in Nuremberg. Clear dark brown with red hints. Malty red fruits sweetish beer. Quite tasty. Full. Decent. Nice.

Draught at the brewpub. Dark yellow, light reddish color. Malty, light sweet flavor with fruity hop notes. Light to medium bitter, dry finish. Fresh, light yeasty, hoppy aroma. Good drinkable but not very special.

On tap at the brewpub 3/11/07. Amber with a moderate white head. Malty aroma with some red fruit and orange hops. Flavour was malty with a dry finish. Good, but nothing like as good as the Schwarzbier.

Bottled, from the brewpub. Hazy copper colour, brief head. Distinct roasty aroma. Mid dryvwith medium bodied and rounded mouthfeel. Roasty with raisins and floral notes. Rose pepper, notes of caramel. Low bitterness.

Review based on the BJCP2008 guidelines (style 3A). Draft @ Hausbrauerei Altstadthof. AROMA: sweet malt aroma with some fruity notes. no hop aromas. some straw notes present. APPEARANCE: reddish amber color and clear. creamy white head with good retention. TASTE: sweet malt flavour with some faint notes of caramel and roasted cereal. some straw flavour. medium bitterness that lingers into a semi-sweet finish. PALATE: medium-low body with some creaminess. medium-low carbonation. OVERALL: altough not very much complex on the aromas and flavours, still a decente RotBier.

Draught. Head is frothy, white, mostly diminishing. Body is dark amber. Aroma is moderately malty (toasted bread, cookie), lightly hoppy (flowers), with a note of orange. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic. Finish is lightly sweet, moderately acidic, lightly bitter. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation. Could have been old/soured, maybe an autumn seasonal? Had in November 2003 at the brewpub.
