Draught at the brewpub. A huge dissapointment. I drove 13 hours from Copenhagen to Nürnberg just to taste this beer. And it sucked. Beautiful reddish brown coloured. Very buttery aroma with sour lactic notes. The same in the flavour. Very infected and very undrinkable. Brewpubs selling infected beer thinking they can get away with it are highly unserious. Altstadthof is one of them.

Pours dark brown with a red gleam and a fine though disappearing tan head. Lots of milk chocolate and creamy notes in the aroma. Full and nicely balanced. Sweet smoooth chocolaty flavor with toffee, malt and brown sugar. Really tasty and highly drinkable. Thanks a lot ChristianSA :-)

Tap @ brewpub. Dark brown with wonderful complex aroma of chocolate and sweet caramel. Flavor is dominated by more caramel, chocolate and licorice. Lightly fruity with a pleasant malt profile like all the beers from the place. Excellent!

Strawberry earthy aroma.
Cloudy red brown,
stable brown creamy head.
Doughy minerally fruit (strawberry).
Fullbodied, creamy mouthfeel.

On draught at Altstadthof. Aroma of toasty malt, dark brown sugar and some breadiness, also faint fruitiness (yeast esters?). Attractive deep mahogany hue, clear, with a creamy and lasting head. Flavor is similarly malty and sweet, some light chocolate and pumpernickel notes, with a very fruity, again apparent yeast character in the finish, along with traces of licorice. Mouthfeel is smooth and lightly carbonated, medium-bodied. Very pleasant.

Tap, at the brewpub. Hazy chestnut red, moderate off white head and low condition. Roast barley dominated aroma with some chalky yeast. Thin roasted notes in the mouth and low chalky yeast in the finish. Would have liked a bit more body in this one.

on tap at the brewery which is a damn nice place. had a big beige head peering out from the top of the ceramic mug, a quick pour of a few drops into a used hefeweizen glass showed it to be a dark brown with a purple tinge. aroma of sultanas, cocoa powder and a faint hint of some stewed fruit. incredibly lush in the mouth and then does a nice little disappearing act. hint of charcoal in the lightly bitter finish. all class, hard to imagine a better schwarzbier

UPDATED: AUG 6, 2009 Dark brown with a thick, rocky head. The aroma is dark fruit notes and dark malt accents of toffee and just a hint of roast. Soft and sweet, with light toffee and some orchard fruit accents. The finish is soft and sweet, making this a very approachable example.

Black coloured and unfiltered. Roasty aroma. Medium bodied, rather dry. Nice velvetty maltiness, earthy flavour, very complex.
It leaves you with a balanced bitterness and the feeling that youve just a world class beer. To me this beer defines the very standard that other schwarzbiers are trying to live up to.
