On tap at the brewpub. Dark brown in the glass, nice head. Roasty-malty aroma. Starts roasty-malty, soft, some nutty notes, a bit sweetish. Also some earthy notes. Finish a bit too mild. Okay.

Clear red brown beer, big aery beige head, little stable, bit adhesive. Aroma: caramel, bit earthy, overripe banana, bit lemony. MF: lots of carbon, light body. Taste: very unpleasant sourness, vinegar, bit of dried fruits. Aftertaste: very sour, lemony, vinegar. Clearly infected. Too bad.

Draught at the brewpub. A huge dissapointment. I drove 13 hours from Copenhagen to Nürnberg just to taste this beer. And it sucked. Beautiful reddish brown coloured. Very buttery aroma with sour lactic notes. The same in the flavour. Very infected and very undrinkable. Brewpubs selling infected beer thinking they can get away with it are highly unserious. Altstadthof is one of them.

Tap in Nürnberg, dark-colored, sweet and malty, a little portery malt in with the fruit, some nice roast, faint hops. Malty but with sufficient balance, has nothing to do with a Schwarzbier as I know it, but it is sufficiently süffig!

Bottle and on tap at the brewery. Deep dark brown color with nice huge beige creamy head. Aroma of milk chocolate, caramel. Taste, milk chocolate, fruity hints, caramel, roasted malt. Nice coffee bitter finish. Nice.

On tap at the brewpub. Dark mahogny with a big, beige, creamy head. A bit more roast in the nose, still quite on the sweet side. Not bad.

UPDATED: JUL 26, 2010 (draught) pours the darkest ruby colour with a frothy dark beige head. aroma of herbal hops and brown sugar, toasted malts, slightly musty but in a good way. flavour is the same, with lots of toasted grain, very smooth, with a slightly alcoholic roasted-bitter finish. medium-bodied with smooth carbonation.

Draught at the brewpub. Poured a very dark red body, blackish, with a tan head. Soft raisiny malty nose, nice, some coffee in there too. light taste, light chicory that goes into the aftertaste. some ho-hum hoppy bitterness, but it doesn’t detract much. The maltiness is fine enough, soft, but it all ends dry. Far better than the helles at least.

Tap, at the brewpub. Hazy chestnut red, moderate off white head and low condition. Roast barley dominated aroma with some chalky yeast. Thin roasted notes in the mouth and low chalky yeast in the finish. Would have liked a bit more body in this one.

Near black colored with red hints. Little light brown head. Sweet caramelly aroma with licorice and handmade yeasty note too. Good one, though not the most traditional schwarz beer aroma. Flavor is more dry with still caramel and licorice, aftertaste has yeast with some lemon. Good beer.
