On tap @ the brewpub. The head is robust, the body dark. It smells roasty. The taste is a bit roasty, malty, balanced. Good! 12/11/10/11/-/11

Pours dark brown with a red gleam and a fine though disappearing tan head. Lots of milk chocolate and creamy notes in the aroma. Full and nicely balanced. Sweet smoooth chocolaty flavor with toffee, malt and brown sugar. Really tasty and highly drinkable. Thanks a lot ChristianSA :-)

On draught at Altstadthof. Aroma of toasty malt, dark brown sugar and some breadiness, also faint fruitiness (yeast esters?). Attractive deep mahogany hue, clear, with a creamy and lasting head. Flavor is similarly malty and sweet, some light chocolate and pumpernickel notes, with a very fruity, again apparent yeast character in the finish, along with traces of licorice. Mouthfeel is smooth and lightly carbonated, medium-bodied. Very pleasant.

Draught at Hausbrauerei Altstadthof: Penetrable black. Fizzling off-white head mostly dissipates. Dull and uninviting nose of medicine, plum and cola. Lighter shades of minerals, dark chocolate truffles and earthy cocoa. Watery and flimsy mouthfeel. Soft carbonation. Overbearingly acidic roast clashes with potent chocolate. Extremely flabby with a faint overripe plum and medicine edge. Ensuing notes of paint and plastic exacerbate the fusel sharpness. Some malty lushness is vaguely perceptible, with much of it being obscured by the rotting plums. Finishes with a cola-like sweetness and malt-deadening fruity twang. Very muddled, limp and colalike, poor malt definition, etc. Quite lackluster. And apparently this was once a reputable schwarzbier worth traveling for. Bummer that no longer seems to be the case.

I taked it away in a one-liter flip-top bottle. Poured dark ruby-black with a creamy, delicious lacing beige head.Characteristic earthy aroma with roasted malt, cacao, some sourish yeast. Moderated carbonation, fine tart, a mountain of roasted garins, coffe and dark chocolate, some earthy character. Lemony and roasted aftertaste. It was fine!!!

Draft at brewpub. Very dark brown w/thick beighe head. Aroma is coffee and nuts. Taste is coffee w/mild hops. A great schwarzbier, one of the best.

UPDATED: DEC 24, 2008 A great black beer. Lives up to its name and is very smoth for its type of beer. Nice light brown head and crisp carmel. Outstanding beer.

Draft at the brewpub. Diacetylic butterscotch aroma, with some caramel and sweetness. Dark brown to black body with a small tan head. Acidic flavor with some sweetness and a light hoppyness in the end.

Tap @ brewpub 01/02/13. Pours black with auburn tinges and a medium, latte-colored head. Aroma is caramel, roasted, chocolate, delicious. Strong chocolate. Taste is chocolate again, dark fruitiness, light roast. Palate is light with not much carbonation. Not as delicious as the aroma lets you expect.
