Draught as "Schwarze" @brewpub
Dark ruby color, small brownish head. Light coffeish, toasted nose. Coffee beans, cappuchino in the flavor with light caramelly notes. Some hops in the aftertaste. Light, but balanced dunkel/schwarzbier.

On tap at Altstadhof Brewpub, Nurnberg. Black with cream head. Quite a tarry, coffee impact right from the start then a heavy sweetness. Fruity sweetness, blackcurrant, right through with a dark roasted malt flavour. A reasonable beer.

Marko (4053) - Split / Zagreb, CROATIA - APR 4, 2012
Draught at the brewpub. Poured a very dark red body, blackish, with a tan head. Soft raisiny malty nose, nice, some coffee in there too. light taste, light chicory that goes into the aftertaste. some ho-hum hoppy bitterness, but it doesn’t detract much. The maltiness is fine enough, soft, but it all ends dry. Far better than the helles at least.

On tap at the brewery in Nuremberg. Black beer lasting beige head. Roasty chocolate and malty flavour. It’s fine. Not overly intense but a decent schwarz. Some light roast Full in the mouth.

Review based on the BJCP2008 guidelines (style 4C). Draft @ Hausbrauerei Altstadthof. AROMA: mild roasted notes reminiscent of coffe with a sweet malty background. APPEARANCE: dark color and somewhat hazy. average pale brown head with medium retention. TASTE: sweet malt flavour with roasted notes. medium-low bitterness with a semi-sweet finish. PALATE: medium-low body with low carbonation. OVERALL: a not bad craft schwarzbier.

On tap at the brewpub. Dark brown in the glass, nice head. Roasty-malty aroma. Starts roasty-malty, soft, some nutty notes, a bit sweetish. Also some earthy notes. Finish a bit too mild. Okay.

Beershine (5218) - The Sunshine State, Florida, USA - JUL 17, 2009
Draft @ brewpub. Great, true black color with thick beige head. Cola aroma has some coffee grounds too. Slick palate has a little diacetyl. The coffee flavors are pronounced and has a porter quality to it as well as coffee creamer but not in a bad way. Drinkable.

Ernest (6343) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - NOV 25, 2011
Draught at Altstadthof. Head is mostly diminishing. Body is dark brown. Aroma is moderately malty (coffee, chocolate, roasted grain, husks), with a note of diacetyl. Flavor is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter, husky. Light to medium body, watery texture, soft carbonation. Such a shame when a once-great beer is no longer so. Not as bad as the Helles, but very dull and disappointing.

TAR (2518) - Lafayette, Colorado, USA - MAR 12, 2012
Draught at Hausbrauerei Altstadthof: Penetrable black. Fizzling off-white head mostly dissipates. Dull and uninviting nose of medicine, plum and cola. Lighter shades of minerals, dark chocolate truffles and earthy cocoa. Watery and flimsy mouthfeel. Soft carbonation. Overbearingly acidic roast clashes with potent chocolate. Extremely flabby with a faint overripe plum and medicine edge. Ensuing notes of paint and plastic exacerbate the fusel sharpness. Some malty lushness is vaguely perceptible, with much of it being obscured by the rotting plums. Finishes with a cola-like sweetness and malt-deadening fruity twang. Very muddled, limp and colalike, poor malt definition, etc. Quite lackluster. And apparently this was once a reputable schwarzbier worth traveling for. Bummer that no longer seems to be the case.

Dixen (1465) - Flagstaff, Arizona, USA - JAN 20, 2006
Draft at the brewpub. Diacetylic butterscotch aroma, with some caramel and sweetness. Dark brown to black body with a small tan head. Acidic flavor with some sweetness and a light hoppyness in the end.
