Travlr (5371) - Washington, USA - APR 8, 2010
UPDATED: AUG 17, 2010 Bottle at pre-ZBF 2010. Maroon color, no head, no lacing. Aroma of scotch and raisins. Taste has port wine, caramel, licorice. Complex and interesting. 3.8 Update: Draft at Churchkey, shared with Bryan, Shawn, Lisa. Paired with epoisses cheese and cherry chutney. More sour than the previous taste, oak is more apparent. Character and complexity have both improved. Very nice. 4.0

womencantsail (3927) - Home of Rebecca Black, California, USA - APR 27, 2012
Very dark brown color with very little head. The nose is tart and acetic, and just weird. The normal strong Belgian beer characteristics come through such as raisins, caramel, and sugar. There is a bit of oak and some apple-like fruit, maybe a touch of vanilla (must be the Calvados). Acetic and also a touch of acetone on the flavor, which pretty much ruins it. Sweet dark sugar and fruit with some wood and vanilla flavors, but overall, pretty much a dud.

750ml shared by Travlr. Deep opaque brown. Thin oily head. Mellowed carbonation, a lot barrel tones. Mellow mouthfeel, but big taste. Quite broad and complex. Oaky. Never overbearingly sweet. Woody, this is an excellent mellow beer for the ABV, a delight to sip on.

Pours a dark dark brown color that’s appears almost black and completely opaque in the glass with slight plum hues and a thin off-white head that immediately disappears. Not much in the way of lacing. Sweet, vinous aroma with a strong barrel presence and lots of dark fruit notes. Subtle earthy oak and vanilla but the calvados character is very prominent with lots of sweet booze, caramel apple and pear. Along with the barrel character, there is some faint spice and vinous dark fruit. Medium bodied with very faint carbonation, strong calvados barrel and vinous dark fruit notes. The barrel presence is strong up front with toasted oak and spirit flavor without much heat (until the finish) along with some apple, pear and fig. This is countered by sweet, vinous dark fruit notes, especially grape, currants and blueberry. The ABV is well masked until the finish where there is some subtle warmth in the chest. Pretty quaffable but could use more oak to balance out the sweetness.

75 cl. bottle sampled @ the bruery \ equally poured into the tasting glasses \ curious about this one Alvinne special offerings are usually way more interesting & better than their staple beers \ This is Mano Negra aged on Calvados barrels although he told me that I shouldn’t believe everything that he claims blindly, I am still inclined to believe him \ Appearance is mahogany/chestnut black with a tanned head, there is clearly some rather lasting head on this \ Tastes like light mellowed out dark fruits, decent portion of wood in here, tart & slightly tannic, hint of lacto in here as well, slightly musty, moss, plenty of wood really, hint of liquorice, slightly sour chocolate malt, definite tobacco, vinous, slightly thin, you get some of the Calvados in the finish but it seems rather thinly layered on \ Body is slightly thin but not watery, soft carbonation, oily \ Not bad but not really living up to any kind of potential either
