3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Draft at Bavarian Lodge. Guess we missed connections again, Alum. Color is just a shade lighter than the average stout. Thin scraggles of foam. The smell brings up sour cherries with a little roasted malt and chocolate, then notes of red wine. Taste is all about the sourness; I can’t find much of the dark malt at first. The cherry yields to cream sherry. Quite puckery. A fuller texture than the average sour beer. Now I’m picking up some chocolate roast malt toward the end. And at the very bottom, a sense memory of Pop Rocks. Definitely a sipper.

Initially this tastes like something you find on aisle 8 at Lowe’s if you drank it instead of putting on your walls. As it warms it gets better... a little bit but you can eat white Elmer and get the same experience.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
On keg in Torst, Brooklyn, rated in November. Opaque reddish to black, off white bubbles head which dissipates quickly. Nose is balsamic vinegar, sour and tart, berry, caramel then there’s some chocolate and toasted and roasted malt in there somewhere, apple. Taste is balsamic vinegar, apple, tart, sour lactobacillus, roasted malt, red wine tannins, chocolate. Vinegar dominating but it’s actually very nicely balanced.

3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Beer Street, Brooklyn tap: pours brown with a small head. Aroma is pretty crazy. Lots of wine, chocolate, vinegar, and wine. Taste is different than the aroma... Mostly just weaker. Light chocolate notes. Quite aour. Light vinegar. Low carbonation. Not bad.

500ml bottle bought at Vinmonopolet Vika in February 2013. Stored in my cellar and shared with Finn and Vegard (untappd) at post Christmas gathering. Naked black surface. Deep ruby-dark in body colour. Oak and tart berries on the nose. Taste of dark caramel, black currant, oak, and dried fruits. Acidity of fruit and berries to a drying finish. Well balanced. Tasty stuff, perfect for sharing (Tromsø, 30.12.2015).

Draft at Tria Taproom. Pours clear red-brown with a 1/2-finger beige head. Aroma of nutty malt, maybe a touch of citrus. Medium body, lightly oily with a long finish. Flavor has notes of tart cherry and lactic sourness over a base of nutty malt.

maybe its just me with this type of sour beer. i do drink them and i do enjoy them. this one was very sour with yeasty notes of almost vomit flavor. perhaps i got a bad bottle but there was nothing good about it besides the color and head on it.

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Bottle. Moderate dark bread, roasted, caramel and hay for the malt, light herbs and grass for the hops, heavy dried leaves and damp basement for the yeast. Head is large, frothy/fizzy, light brown with darker swirls, with excellent yet slippery lacing, and is mostly lasting. Color is murky dark brown. Flavor starts harshly acidic, then finishes heavily acidic, lightly bitter and sour. Palate is light to medium, watery with a fizzy carbonation and a tart finish. I’m still no fan of this style, but this Sour Brown Ale has some interesting attributes.
