Draft at Bavarian Lodge. Guess we missed connections again, Alum. Color is just a shade lighter than the average stout. Thin scraggles of foam. The smell brings up sour cherries with a little roasted malt and chocolate, then notes of red wine. Taste is all about the sourness; I canít find much of the dark malt at first. The cherry yields to cream sherry. Quite puckery. A fuller texture than the average sour beer. Now Iím picking up some chocolate roast malt toward the end. And at the very bottom, a sense memory of Pop Rocks. Definitely a sipper.

33 cl. canít find a date on it anywhere, so I assume this is the right beer and not any of the other variations listed. Itís 8% and says "Ale aged for one year on oak barrels" but doesnít specify Burgundy. Slight gusher pours dark brown with a faint red tint. Huge foam settles to a thin but sturdy lunar landscape. Nose is oxidized grapes and brown sugar. Tastes of rusty grape and apple with a mild tart. Also has some mineral, caramelized brown sugar and balsamic notes. Surprisingly little oak but it does show a bit in the long finish. Medium body has medium carbonation and a good balance.

Thinner than some flemish styles, but still itís very nice. Itís maybe not the most complex or sour beer Iíve ever had, but there are plenty of others beers out there that donít even come close to what this one...Plenty of sour aroma and flavor. I particularly like the fruitiness of this one.

(11 oz bottle) Ruddy brown body, minimal beige head. Sweet aroma, brown sugar, vinegar, wood. Light to medium body, relatively flat; oily texture. Solidly tart, fruit (grape, plum) but not overpowering, sugary sweet; earthy, woody notes.

2015 bottle, assumedly, at OEC SourFest, 8/15/15.
Light mahogany brown body shows good clarity and a small, beige-yellow head with moderate retention.
Pretty crazy process they got going on here...the description says a sour ale aged on grapes, then blended with Podge and oak barreled and finally re-blended with Podge before bottling....There is some grape-like fruitiness/tartness in the nose, with sticky caramel, vanilla, toffee and prunes. I like MOST of these things in a stout (even if itís a Belgian stout) but not grapes....I pretty much never want my dark beers to be grapey. Other than that, mild wood and chocolate emerge with warming but thereís a vague damp earth/damp leaf character overtop of it.
The flavor certainly shows the stout, though itís quite thinned out, leaving the chocolate, light roast and vanilla mixed about with sour acids and some simple, sweet malt character. Itís oddly endearing, and not bad, despite definitely trying to do too much. What I donít like, which has nothing to do with the process for this beer, is the heavily earthy, borderline dirty character I get from a lot of Alvinne beers (Podge included). I donít think I like their yeast at all (Morpheus undressed with undrinkable, I thought).

Sampled from bottle @ RBBSG 2015. Murky brownish color, small off-white to beige head. Smell and taste sour, grapepeel sour, tannine. Meh.

Bottle from Boise Coop. I was hoping the oak barrel aging would be more noticeable, but canít really detect any traces, other than the sour palate being slightly subdued. Dark brown pour with minimal head. Aroma and taste are pure sour, pit fruit sweetness. Taste is more raisins, plums, apricots and a hint of vinegar tartness. Mild finish.

Bottled. Medium brown pour. Hints of oak and malt but otherwise sour as all hell. Not sure if I b really dig this particular twist.

Red currant, oak, cranberry nose. Cloudy maroon, thin tan head. Currant with a definite cocoa presence from start to finish. Quite tart, velvety, medium body. Quite good and the price I paid was not bad at all.

Taste: metallic start, red wine tannins, sourish, red currants. Aftertaste: sourish, lacto bacillus, lemony, metallic, bitter touch, some tannins.
