4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: MAR 27, 2008 Bottle sampled at the brewery. Cloudy golden pour with a thick, rocky white head. Superb aroma of yeast and fresh fruity hops. Superb flavor of fruity american hops with spices and yeast, it’s very dry and sharp. The body is medium with a creamy texture and moderate carbonation. The previous Extra was good, but this restyled version is simply amazing.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
From bottle at Alvinne. Pours hazy yellow to orange with a dense white head. Light caramel malt, solid spiced aroma. Flavour starts spiced. Shows a mild caramel base. And regains a solid spiced flavour towards the finish. Goes into a light fruity banana lingering finish and a mild spiced note.

UPDATED: JUL 21, 2008 On tap at ZBF 08. Blond, very hoppy beer. It’s pretty good, drinkable, along the lines of XX Bitter. Belgian yeasty hoppy golden ale. Above average. 3.5/5
Re-rate at Twickenham Brewery tasting 08. Very pleasant hoppy, creamy beer that is very very drinkable.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
ZBF 2008: Hazy dark yellow with a slight tint of red. A decent sized creamy off-white head sits nicely on top. The sweet aroma of a banana with hops sprinkled on top. Yeast, candied orange rinds, lemon zest and a hint of basil. Taste seemed just a bit harsh. Mix of grassy hop flavor with a bitter/herbal yeast, both fighting to become "King Bitter." The yeast character also seems to make the beer a bit thick.

ZBF 2008, SInt Niklaas, Belgium
Muddy, blond body. Off-white creamy to rocky head. Aroma of hops and orange. Heavily bitter, citric flavour. Quite 1 dimensional and not extremely well balanced, but not bad.

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
ZBF 2008 on the Saturday Poured a hazy lemon colour with white head, and started off with a good rush of hops and bitterness. The bitterness sort of hung around like an uninvited mother-in-law, which is a strange thing for me to say because if Loz and I were married my mother-in-law would always be most welcome, it’s just typical of my notes sometimes and bizarely I meant for the bitterness thing in a positive way, I like that about it. There was a very good tang to this beer, another flurry of sweetness, finishing with some soft slightly restrained hops, very nice.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
So many Belgian attempts to produce extra-hoppy ales have had somewhat clumsy results, as if the hops are striking discordant notes with other ingredients--or more commonly, the brewer is just holding back and can’t quite commit to the hoppy thang. Not so in this case! Thus we have my favorite brew I sampled at ZBF08. Pours thickly cloudy old gold, with a thick, off-white head turning to persistent film. Citric-hoppy nose, like grapefruit, but also notes of oranges and green grass. Nose is fantastic, and it has you wishing it was even stronger. Flavor makes up for it, with a very hoppy bitterness managing to be both dry and fresh-tasting, counteracted only a bit by a light, malty sweetness. Bitterness is sticky into the finish and aftertaste. I hope this recipe becomes a consistent one for Alvinne.
