Maria (9631) - Thisted, DENMARK - APR 11, 2009
It is a beautiful, dark red mahogany color and the head is creamy. The aroma has notes of malt, a light sourness, yeast, spice, berries and dark fruit. The flavour is slightly sour and sweet with notes of yeast, fruit, plum, berries and the finish is sour. IMO a bit too sour, unless it is a sour.

As De Eycken Balthazar. 750 from Alvinne. Pours dark brown with a big frothy tan head. Unusual spicey aromas. Strong roast malt. Hint of oak. Near full bodied with smoothish carbonation. Flavor of strong spices, dark malt, and light oak touch. (Couldn’t place ginger at the time, but indeed it was present.) Powerful flavors. Spicey, slightly bitter finish. Reminded a bit of juniper.

2008 bottle. Deep dark brown color. malt, honey, ginger and coreander in the aroma. Malty sweet, slightly oaky flavor with honey, coreander and ginger. Just a bit alcoholic. Sticky mouthfeel, pear in the aftertaste. Maybe a bit disappointing.

9/10/9/8/fl/9

A: Muddy chestnut color with no head at all, just three bubbles rise. Scant lacing. Aroma is dominated by coriander, but also a background of nutmeg and roasted malts. Flavor is dominated by the spice – pine, coriander, ginger, chocolate malt, and a sour finish. Maybe some lacto in there. Medium body, pleasant to drink. Third best beer of a long tasting session on New Year’s Eve 2009. Better than the regular Balthazar.

750ml bottle acquired in trade with bu11zeye (thanks!). GUSHER alert!!!! This one gushed all over my office floor. Poured all head, and I mean all head. Took a while and settled into a medium and muddy amberish/brown color. Aromas of woodiness/oaky, ginger, other spices, some dark fruits (dark cherries), and grapes. Tastes of the same woody/oak, spices, lighter vanilla, and some dark fruiits. Thinner body and somewhat flat body.

Bottle shared by nickls. Deep garnet beer. The nose is loaded with sweet spice. A bit of light cinnamon, clove and a touch of sweet chewy malts. Quite a lot of vineous oakiness. Chewy cherry pits along with some light tartness as well. Initially sweet, but that is cut by the oak and a kiss of tartness. A light lingering earthiness that works well with the lighter oaky notes. Not really as much vanilla contribution as is often seen with oak, but there is a bit of tannic quality.
