4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 DruncanVeasey (5136) - NUNEATON, Blue Square Prem, Warwickshire, ENGLAND - JAN 20, 2010
Mahogany pour heavy with condition, a fat yellow-beige collar following the beer to the bottom of the glass. Brazenly spicy, seductive aroma awash with...well, who knows what? Cinnamon, clove, Jagermeister, Cola cubes, gingernuts, Swedish biscuits are all possibles. Nice surprising tint of sour when you get round to drinking it; fizzy cola bottles, chocolate yoghurt, Jagermeister and cheap coke, dusty low cocoa/high milk solid chocolate, milky coffee with no coffee in it...far from buried by herbs and spice. Softly lactic, whispers with smoke in the linger. Silken, integrated, humming with the kind of acceptable spiciness you don’t often find. Underrated: one of the best Alvinnes I’ve had.

Bottle - 330ml. Pours a cola brown body with average carbonation and a thin brown bubbly/foamy head. Nice, complex malty/hoppy aroma with cinnamon, yeasty, and brown sugar hints. Alcohol is very well hidden. Robust malty/hoppy taste with spicy, caramel, and oaky notes. Ends with a long, sharp, bittersweet finish. Perfect on a cold, rainy afternoon.

Bottle. Peculiar aroma of wood, yeast, malt and citrus. Dark brown colour with huge ligth brown head. Be careful with unbottening. It is almost explosive. Slighly sweet and fruity flavour with a distinct dry woody finish. Rich carbonation.

Medium cream to beige head, fast gone, over hazy cola-coloured beer. End of bottle near-solid yeast. Very nice, fresh-smelling herbs/spices mix. I seem to get lavender, rosemary, cypresss and a touch of cinnamon - juniper too, maybe? Intriguing! Further gingerbread with a well-baked crust. Spicy taste, with light, but distinct sourish lining. Dark malts, and I can guess the wheat. Again rosemary, juniper - and laurel allez . Rosehips too - and sparadrap . Hmpff -- wanna know. Very slick, medium to well-bodied, quite spritzy. Nice one guys! Tell us more. Actually, IMHO this would do very well as a Christmas ale.

33cl bottle bought at the brewery shop during the pre-Zythos event. Thanks to thewolf, Rene, as I wouldn’t have bought a bottle unless he’d asked for one in a trade. Black as far as I can work out or very dark brown, thin beige head. Mixed dried spices hit the aroma first off. Yes there are some smooth dark fruits in the body and some juiciness. The spice reappears on the finish. Bit of cinnamon and nutmeg. The spice isn’t too dominant and there is room for some good jammy blackcurrant and blackberry in there. Even cranberries. Only a touch of sourness, but it is there on the sides of the tongue and builds in the finish. I don’t normally like spiced beers, but this one has balance and the juicy fruits are really likeable. Yep, a good beer. The sour dryness on the finish stops it getting out of hand. Decent stuff.

Bottle. Dark brown with a creamy, small beige head. Wonderful spicy and sweet aroma, maybe with rye bread. Sweet molasses flavours, good spiciness to offset the sweetness. Smooth, low carbonation. Very nice- a feast for both spring and winter.
