This was an interesting beer that I tried at a local wine bar because I’d never heard of it before. I didn’t catch must Belgian flavor from it. It seemed to me like a nice IPA, though that is not my favorite style. It was interesting to try and I’m glad I got a chance as I’d never seen it before.

I drink this beer to the independence of Belgium! Happy independence day! Pours a cloudy orangish gold color with a ferocious head that takes over the tulip glass I poured it into! The fluffy off-white head lingers for quite a while and is made up of mostly tiny bubbles. The head almost looks like vanilla ice cream. The weakish aroma is hops, funk, and a touch of orange juice. The flavor is quite bitter with a stinging sensation of pine predominating. There are some small notes of citrus as well. The beer seems a bit unbalanced as the bitterness over powers the small-medium body of the beer. The beer finishes rather dry with little hint of alcohol.

FIRST TRIAL: A thick white head covers the foggiest, haziest, dirtiest, orange body I think I’ve ever seen; aroma is very spicy from both the European hops and Belgian yeast; alcohol is definitely there in the taste, but is restrained by the bitterness and almost candied sugar-like sweetness; there’s far less carbonation than in most Belgians, but still more than a typical ale. Overall, this isn’t a fantastic beer, and I’ve had hoppier Belgians, with other more redeeming qualities, but it was interesting enough that I’m glad I bought it once.

I really liked this beer. I saw where several rated this as an IPA... but Ratebeer has it as a Belgian Strong. This beer is complex and fun. The alcohol is well hidden, the flavor is hoppy, but not your citrus hoppy, more spicy with a hint of pepper, some honey (not sweet, just flavor) clove... a hint of funk, but not much. LOVE the long aftertaste. Pours a murky orange with a nice foamy head that dissipates quickly with little or no pattern. The smell is similar to taste, very different, but not very strong. What a fun beer...

Thanks to Davy from whom I received this bottle yesterday at a very important occasion. Poors a light amber colored beer with a big head and good lacing. According to the brewer, today 24-10-06, belgians most hopped beer (115 IBU) or a wink to american hoppy beerlovers. I suspect even some dry hopping as well. The aroma is evidently very hoppy with some hints of caramel. The taste is overwhelmingly hoppy with some alcohol notes. The aftertaste is all hops and quite bitter.

Hazy orage color with huge long-lasting head. Soapy aroma with a bit of lemon and yeastiness. Spicy flavor with balanced hop bitterness. Smooth finish hides the alcohol very well. Very nice beer.

Amber colored with a big foamy heady. Hops dominate with some fruit aroma as well, heavily carbonated. Crisp, bitter finish that sticks in your throat. A decent, but unspectatcular offering

This is the, together with the Extra, the best Alvinne-beer. It’s bitter but soft. A shame you don’t see it in the bars so much.

when i opened this bottle i can on to rate beer to get an idea of what i was in for. the first thing i read was that Gaspers commercial description claims it’s one of the hoppiest beers in Belgium. I would feel much more comfortable if they removed that statement. when i see that i think of houblin choeffe and, sorry to say it’s not even close. please don’t misunderstand me, it does have a very formiddable hop character, but it’s got a much larger malt backbone. The hops definitely aid the belgiam yeast in giving this beer a little bit of a bit, but the malts really bring home the flavor profile. I taste hints of werthers caramel candies and even a hint of creme soda with a little honey. a fun beer to drink but please disregard the commercial description before popping the top.
