3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 FlacoAlto (3506) - Tucson, Arizona, USA - DEC 27, 2010
Sampled July 2010
A solid pour into my Cantillon tulip produces a pink tinged, tan colored head that is one-finger thick. The beer has a concentrated red body to it that is fairly hazed and shows a bright, maraschino cherry color to it when held up to the light. The aroma smells of sour cherries, graham crackers, red wine berry like notes, some light spicy wood character as well as earthy wood notes and a touch of phenolic / plastic notes towards the finish.
The beer tastes sour as it first hits my palate, though it is not as sour as a Lambic. The beer is very dry and very light bodied. The flavor finishes with a spicy oak character and a bit of tannic astringency to it. Light cherry flavors are noticeable, though not as much as was found in the aroma, and this is accentuated by some tartness and floral character. Quite refreshing due to the light body, this might even have been a bit too watery if not for the tannic oak structure. The red wine character plays a definite role here with the wine like berry notes, an oak character that is very reminiscent of a red wine; it is very evocative of a red wine, even if it is a very small / faint one.
This is quite nice, even if it is a touch on the thin side. Definitely let this beer warm up, the wine character becomes much more apparent as it does and really makes this quite nice; there is even a touch fo funkiness that starts to come out (slightly cheesy and a bit musty). This was a nice surprise!
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20 puzzl (3176) - New York, New York, USA - DEC 26, 2010
Bottled. Aroma has a tart cherry punch, plywood, a speck of cinnamon. Some brussels sprouts after swirling. Unassertive. Mouthfeel is super dry, bordering on astringency at points, with a lot of nice oak character. Mildly acidic, with a long cherry finish. Lacking in body.
3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 thewolf (9992) - Kolding, DENMARK - DEC 22, 2010
Bottle, bought @ Alvinne Beershop.
Pours an absolutely lovely, clear, deep ruby red. Small, rather fizzy, off-white pink head. Stays as a thin rim ’round the edges. Nice sweet fruity aroma, lots of oak, some mild red wine tannins, vanilla. High carbonation, light watery palate. Flavour is mildly dry, somewhat dull at first, then good tartness, fine oaky presence. There are grapes, little tannins, some good cherries. Light marzipan, some vanilla. Quite decent actually, compared to how much sweetness there is in the original version. Nice.
3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 sayravai (4654) - Helsinki, FINLAND - NOV 21, 2010
(Bottled, 0.75l) Murky dark red with a small pink head. Mildly tart cherry nose with the "strawberry ice cream brett mix" still evident. Quite mild cherry flavor with faint tartness and a peachy-mushy brett touch. Almost medium body, lowish carbonation. Still not very convincing after the barrel treatment - lacks tartness and body. 4254

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 GT2 (5810) - Jurupa Valley, California, USA - AUG 30, 2010
750mL courtesy of Travlr. Poured a deep pink/purple with thin bubbles abounding- no real head though. Aroma is outstanding: rich cherry pie, baked sweet cherries, sour cherries. Amazing kriek nose. Taste is a little thin, tart berries, not really full sour, pretty highly carbonated on the palate. Refreshing, not too intense. Could use more time in the barrel to develop a full sourness.
