3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 FlacoAlto (3143) - Tucson, USA - DEC 27, 2010
Sampled July 2010
A solid pour into my Cantillon tulip produces a pink tinged, tan colored head that is one-finger thick. The beer has a concentrated red body to it that is fairly hazed and shows a bright, maraschino cherry color to it when held up to the light. The aroma smells of sour cherries, graham crackers, red wine berry like notes, some light spicy wood character as well as earthy wood notes and a touch of phenolic / plastic notes towards the finish.
The beer tastes sour as it first hits my palate, though it is not as sour as a Lambic. The beer is very dry and very light bodied. The flavor finishes with a spicy oak character and a bit of tannic astringency to it. Light cherry flavors are noticeable, though not as much as was found in the aroma, and this is accentuated by some tartness and floral character. Quite refreshing due to the light body, this might even have been a bit too watery if not for the tannic oak structure. The red wine character plays a definite role here with the wine like berry notes, an oak character that is very reminiscent of a red wine; it is very evocative of a red wine, even if it is a very small / faint one.
This is quite nice, even if it is a touch on the thin side. Definitely let this beer warm up, the wine character becomes much more apparent as it does and really makes this quite nice; there is even a touch fo funkiness that starts to come out (slightly cheesy and a bit musty). This was a nice surprise!

(2009 Vintage) / limited to 250 bottles – 75 cl. bottle split with Belgbeergeek – thx to him: (A) Bourgogne dark red, no head, pretty wine-looking – (S) reminds me of Kerasus 2010, lots of nice tart cherries with a slight sweet side to them, slightly woody – (T) slightly watery tart cherries, vineous leading into the slightly bitter wooden, tannins, Bourgogne part – (B) definitely thinned out by the BA, basically just takes Kerasus 2010 a notch down, slight sweetness & tart cherry finish of the base beer is replaced by ok Bourgogne, tannins, wood,… soft carb. ok beer, definitely too much thinned out

Gelungen! 9/11/11/11/11/11

August 16, 2011 - 750ml bottle courtesy of nate2g shared with .. several other folks. 2009 bottle, only 250 bottles made. Ruby-amber, diminishing white head, looked lovely. Vinous, oaky, soft aroma - big red wine tannins, sweet and sour, juicy - the brett is not all that prevalent but the oak, oh my the oak, yes. Taste - frickin’ great - orange zest, red wine, light oak and alcohol - so good, a joy to drink - that’s how you do barrel-aging!! Average body, a bit sticky, lightly acidic, decently carbonated, a sophisticated tingly finish of green oak and citrus bitterness. So good.
