2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
In short: A messy dirty dark ale of some kind
How: Bottle 330ml. Consumed when probably one year after bottling (rough estimate here)
The look: GUSHER ALERT!!! GUSHER ALERT!!! Cloudy murky brown body, lots of particles, medium beige head with medium retention
In long: Nose is yeasty, roasted wood, dirty carpet, stuff… This beer doesn’t smell very clean. Taste feels like a melting pot of whatever the brewer could get his hands on. Dirty fruits, tobacco, dirty tree bark, yeast, aggressive spiciness, roast, toasted dry nuts, strong citric notes, cacao powder, probably other stuff... Aggressive soda-pop style carbonation. Finish is dirty-harsh and mouth-drying astringent. Alcohol remains mostly well hidden. As much of a mess as this beer is (and IT IS a mess) I was able to drink my bottle without thinking about a drain pour. Although losing 1/3 in the gushing probably helped. This beer is more of a intriguing puzzling mess than an actual bad beer. But I still don’t recommend it. There’s a new rumor going around that Alvinne is not a consistent brewery. I just started that rumor with this rating. Psss, pass it along.

UPDATED: MAR 3, 2012 Bouteille en éruption, énorme tête. Fruits confits englouti dans un bouquet étrange d’herbes. Au nez je respire presque l’aneth.

Bottle. Pours dark brown with lots of floaties and a medium tan head. The aroma is quite funky with notes of chocolate and dark fruit. The flavour is hard roasted with lots of funky notes. Dried fruit and brett. Very dry and dark fruity finish.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Gusher! Which seems to be par. Black colored pour with a giant khaki head. Slowly falling, leaving plenty of lace behind. A sugary sweet aroma with hints of chocolate, raisins, caramel. Very tart up front. Roasted character comes through with a biting bitterness in the back. Dry and sweet. Not bad.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
33cl, from Alvinne shop. New batch @ new brewery. Nice active foamy creamy moka like head.

2.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 9/20
Pours a deep brown, almost black beer with a lot of foam. It smells sour, yeasty, fruity, nearly like a Geuze. Starts intense yeasty, sour, bitter on the palate. That probably comes from the Magnum hops. The middle part is slightly roasty, malt body is growing up! The finish has a very bitter hop aroma, which resonates very long. Strange Imperial Stout. Here I would have expected something completely different ...

2010 Vintage (cap says best before December 2012 / Lot: 529) \ bottle @ home \ Got this one from the now defunct Alvinne webshop, got some of their beers since they were at very democratic prices and they are an interesting brewer \ This one was still brewed at the old brewery \ Label uses the regular design and a nice amount of technical info about the beer, this is my third one from the Morpheus series, apparently this one is an imperial stout brewed with Morpheus yeast as are almost all of their beers \ Bottle is a gusher as are most of their beers, frankly I blame the Morpheus yeast but it could be a number of factors really but still I am convinced, although this is not as bad as some of their beers \ Pours a huge head at first, very lively carbonation but quickly settles to a small tanned head of a strange shade, colour is very dark wooden brown, almost going to light black, disturbing white floating pieces that look like something I would expect to see floating at the top of milk that has gone bad \ Smell is very heavy on overripe dark fruits, with a strong very soapy hop background, lots of spices, some yeast and definite malt background \ Taste is slightly odd, somehat sweet, watery roasted, slightly burned coffee beans, chocolate (on the sweeter side of things) fermented dark fruits with firstly some fermenting dark grapes touch of plums, prunes & raisins, something soapy, watery spices, slightly roasted malts, touch of liquorice, unintentional (?) brett, lots of charcoal especially in the aftertaste, slight yeast, smidgeon of cherry coke, chewy sweet bread, odd bitterness in the aftertaste with a hint of sourness in the finish \ Is this supposed to be this way? not entirely sure \ Body is a bit too light for this style, very slightly watery, slightly over carbonated \ Not entirely bad & it certainly grows on you rather quickly but somehow I wonder that this was the intent of the brewer, seems a bit more like and interesting failure than a mildly successful experiment
