Grima (1891) - Saarburg, Rhineland-Palatinate, GERMANY - MAR 31, 2011
Draught on the Alvinne Craft Beer Festival 2011! The beer in the glass is deep black, with fine cream crown. The smell is malty and dominant sour, also slightly yeasty. Starts very recent, also very sour yeasty. Even the aftertaste is delicious malty and sour, with a pleasant yeast aroma in the background. The further course is light and sweet, sour, and delicious!

Bottle 33 cl. Courtesy of Pinball. Pours a cloudy opaque dark brown with a vague tint of red and a beige head. Heavy barnyard aroma, manure and sweat indeed. Medium body, overly carbonated but at least not explosive for once from Alvinne. Some dry grapy fruitiness, more dry than really tart, some iron and blood. Ends dry and sulphurous. 230311

Bottled. An unclear dark red beer with a huge brown head. The aroma has notes of dust, hops, berries, and malt. The flavor is sweet with notes of berries, wood, brettanomyces, and caramel, leading to a dry and tart finish. Thanks pinball for sharing.

(bottle) pours a hazy dark orange colour with a frothy beige head. aroma of bread dough, citrus fruits, balsamic vinegar and herbal hops, with some slightly abrasive notes of grain and cardboard. flavour is mostly bread dough and grain, quite smooth, with a hint of cherries, herbs and vinegar. light to medium-bodied with lively carbonation and a dry sour finish.

Tulip draft on tap at Bavarian Lodge (Lisle, IL). Pours a dark murky brownish hye, some light on the edges and bottom, with a big cakey tannish light brown head sitting atop. Stays huge, laces well. Aromas are roasted malts, sweet cocoa, soured dark fruits with some sweet plum and sour cherries mixing. Touches of lemon, gentle melon, with sour grapes and a fruity essence, touches of brett and more lactic acid, gentle fruit sourness grows. Initial is lighter bodied, with a bite of tart grapes and melon, touches of dark fruit, cocoa and light roastiness. Some lemonade, touches of lactic acid jump in and out. A decent sourness, with lingering roast, toast, and cocoa. Some touches of sourness, but not altogether a sour beer, still clinging to it’s malt base for a dominance. Still, sour grapes with touches of plum, cocoa, some cherries, melon, and lemons play nice on the palate. Taste is solid, albeit the beer remains light on the palate. I liked it, but it didn’t assert itself much. A nice tart sour, darker malt base, that remains a bit vague, but certainly was an enjoyable beer. Tartness on the aroma seems a bit stronger than the actual beer, a bit more dried out as opposed to sour as you get into it, but still a nice fruity tart sour kick. A-Ok with me, interesting.

Bottled (from beerplanet..eu). Deep ambery brown colour with a mediumsized off-white head that leaves some lace. Aroma is quite sour wood, mild vinegary notes as well as some roasted malts and mild dark frutiyness as well as some chocolate. Flavour is quite much the same in a very nice balance. As it warms up it also gets some nice berryish notes.

Bottle at home with Lyoli. Pours murky brown with an effervescent head. Definite sour malts on the nose, some raisins and wood, a bit of sugar. Lightly sweet, moderate to medium sour, some tart grapes and dark fruits. Light medium in body with brisk carbonation. Mild tart finish, some doughy malts come through. A pretty decent beer.

opaque dark purple brown, white ring for a head. Bit of jammy spiced plum, very dusty and earthy, light chocolate. Flavor is small disappointment, light watery chocolate-plum profile, overly carbonated leading to a bit caustic finish, light oak.
