$3 single at Binny’s, April 2011. Beer is more of a porter brwon, although markedly darker. Nice foamy head. Sweet candi sugar smell permeates the room as I’m typing. Taste is very sweet, but immediately a tart backwash comes in. Plenty of fizz that helps mix in the tastes. Pretty loaded with hops, even if the bottle’s 2 years old and it’s the Challenger and East Kent Goldings (that’s what the label says). Gets a little gassy just halfway through. Some dark roast malt to it. Doesn’t quite play well with its dark Kandi sugar (again, from the label). This is simply kind of… strange. Which is what makes it a Belgian beer.

a little high on the carbonation - otherwise a nice example of what a Belgian impy stout can be. Heavy on the berries and dark fruit, with light roast and chocolate. If only the feel was better...

Pours the deepest mahogany into the glass with a funny diminished tan head that leaves little to trace lacing. The nose is of nice dark esters and dark berries, with just a hint of roasted chocolate. Flavors follow similarly, with sweet dark berries, dark stone fruits, roasted grains, bitter chocolates, and finish with a roasted bitter grain and some ABV heat. The full body on this, combined with the pseudo-juicy palate, semi-dry mouthfeel, cuts through hearty meals and also provides a superb aperitif or after-dinner sipper to complement said meals. Not too heavy, but substantial and complex for days. What an excellent example of a Belgian Impy Stout! Prost!

Bottle. Color hazy brown with almost no head. Aroma sweet, liquorice, roasted. Taste sweet, roasted, caramel.

This is my 5,000th rate and something a bit special. On 6th Feb 2015 I was at a Belgian Beer Board website bottle exchange evening at De Bierboom (Brugge). Sat next to me was Podge, co-brewer of this beer. We have met at various Belgian locations over the years and even in Germany once, but never in the UK where we both live. Anyway he brings out three 33cl bottles of unlabelled prototypes of this beer, just with 1,2 and 3 stuck on them. Each bottle was this beer but with different hop profiles. Podge could not remember which hops were used in which bottle (1,2 or 3) and not even which prototype was eventually chosen for production. All I can say is they all tasted great, as Podge, myself and a friend called Tony tried to pick the best one of the three: we couldn’t agree and just enjoyed the moment while all around us bottles were being passed around as we sipped and appreciated Podge’s Imperial Stouts.

Thankfully the bottle shop warned me this may be a gusher. Safely opened in the sink with a quick foam explosion and yeasty aroma. Full bodied, dark brown Imperial Stout with Belgian sweetness, roasted malt and moderate bitterness.

Bottle @ FUAD share. Deep reddish pour with a small head. Nose is a bit acidic. Cherry fruit leather and cocoa. Chocolate. Taste is pretty dry and peppery. Manure. More fruit leather. Dark chocolate. Full body, soft carb.

Cola coloured with an inch of tan foam. Great lacing. Nose of dark chocolate, coffee, roasted malt bitterness, with a hint of Brett. Very bitter roasted malt and chocolate to start. Light coffee with a very dry almost tart taste in the finish. Medium body and carbonation. The cap mentions October 2016. A best after date? The label says it can be kept for 8 years or more.

More like a Belgian strong than an imperial stout. Strong yeasty flavours, and sour notes. Not unbalanced though, and very enjoyable.

Draft at Khyber Pass. Very dark brown pour that starts with beige foam that mostly disappeared. Large swath of dark caramel malt flavors. Earthy, musty wood barrel notes. Dark chocolate cherry cordials. Liquorice roots. Truffles. Sweet orange peels. Fruitcake. Slight smoke. Bit tart. Body reads a bit thin. Belgium yeast is noticeable. Not my favorite, but not bad at all.

Bottle labelled 2007 (thanks Martin!), pours a brown that’s near-black with a beige head, quite gassy though thankfully not a gusher. Nose is cocoa, musty wood, touches of liquorice and Bovril. Rich and heavy yet somehow slightly watery too. More cocoa and liquorice, along with dry bitterness and a slightly tart plumminess in the background. Strong dry and slightly sour umami notes. Very Belgian!
