COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bitterhed: 80+ IBU

English: With this special brew, Batch One, we dared to experiment with combining our usual devotion to a solid malt profile with the addition of American aroma hops. Batch One is an American-inspired Ale characterized by its vast, full body and generous use of hops. In the glass, it has a reddish-brown colour with a coppery glow, and a beige-coloured head leaves a nice lacing behind. For this brew we have chosen to only use the noble Simcoe hop, both for boiling and the following dry-hopping. The hops give the beer its fresh citrus-like character and impart a solid bitterness to balance the sweet caramel malt.
Bitterness: 80+ IBU

Poured a hazy red amber color with a small, off white head that left sticky lacing all over the glass. Aroma of caramel malts, nuts, pine, floral hops, citrus fruits, and a bit of brown sugar. Taste of citrus fruits, pine, caramel malts, tobacco, a bit of dark fruits, and light alcohol in the finish.

Draft at Blue monk. Sherry colored pour. Rich maltiness, almost barley wine like. Toffee notes. Good dose of hops. Big bitterness. Pretty tasty. Strong and boozy. Aggressive on the palate

My first beer from this brewery and I am not at all impressed. +++ Sampled from a 16.9 oz brown bottle this beer poured a murky dark brown color with a small creamy tan head that left minimal lacing. The aroma was pleasantly funky and bready with notes of sour caramel, faint molasses, cherry and licorice. The flavor was bitter and astringent with elements of wood, earth, must, bread, funk, chalk, bubblegum. leather, tobacco and smoke. For all the complexity there was a pervading offness almost rancidness that totally spoiled what seemed to have the potential to be a decent brew. I wonder if some sort of infection was present. Long finish. fairly full bodied. Some promise here but I ended up dumping it.

500 ml. bottle. Served at cellar temperature. Pours a medium, tiny bubbled, lasting ivory head, with attractive lacing, over a hazy dark amber (SRM 13) body....nose is heavy toffee/caramel, treacle, brown sugar, lighter citrus, pine.....taste is toffee/caramel, dried fruits including golden raisin, fig, cherry, finishing with a medium, lingering, light pineapple, citrus and resin hop bitterness....mouth feel thick, alcohol hidden, carbonation makes a very creamy sensation. This is definitely an American Barley Wine in style. It has 80+ IBU’s per the label, but is nicely balanced between the malt and hop backbones. It has good complexity. BJCP 7/3/15/4/8

Cloudy dark amber, beige head. Nice barley wine aroma! Taste has dried fruits, medium sweet and medium bitter. Rather dry. Bit too dry and bitter this one. Carbo could have been a little less as well.

Aroma is nice and hoppy. Pine, floral, and some molasses. Pours red with a frothy medium head. Taste is great. Good hop forward pine notes, some molasses in the mouth and finishes with a notetaker pilsner yeast. Great drink.

Ruby body, off white body. Dried fruit, grapes, cake, bit sandy. Taste disappoints, with dead hops and sharp, astringent bitterness. Too old, probably. (At the De Molen tasting)

50cl bottle. Pours a clear dark amber with a big white head. Smells amazing of ripe fruits, pine needs, and lots of hops. Tastes odd; something like smoked peat, lots of bitterness, grass -- like a "sideways" bitterness though. It does grow on you, and then the medium sweetness comes in, with plenty of caramel flavor. Syrupy texture. Medium body. Soft carbonation. Finishes dry.

500 mL bottle shared by Butters at the 17th Richmond Ratebeer Gathering, 1/28/12. Pours a clear amber color with a thin off-white head that fades quickly. Aroma of toffee, earth, salt, herbal and citrus hops, toasted malts. The taste is sunflower seeds, citrus, toffee, caramel and brown sugar. Full bodied, low carbonation, lingering bitterness.
