COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION

Nice to see this category can be done by non Americans. This one is great. Good malt. Good hoppiness. Just overall it’s good and highly recommended.

16.9 oz bottle to snifter (shared with the Mrs.). Looks good; an opaque dark brownish black with foamy beige head. Smells of dark malt, hops, and roast. Tastes like it smells with a bit of dark chocolate as well. Pleasant on the palate. A good example of the style.

$9.99 + VT tax for the 500 mL bottle purchased from Hunger Mountain Saturday morning. To long-stemmed wine glass, it pours a dark brown: creamily sudsy beige head 1½ fingers in length. Aromas of Centennial, Pearl and Midwest hops, algae, sea salt, limeade, pinot grigio grapes, orange zest, farmhouse yeast, and sweat, and cardboard. Tastes the same with the addition of dark chocolate, Port wine, coffee dregs, oolong tea, wormwood, spruce tips, pine needles, dried minced garlic, pipe smoke, and avocados. Intensely earthy and bitter. Some caramelized onion experienced at swallow. Its ABV, even at 7.5%, smacked me on the head by the first sip, so be careful with this one. Did anyone also detect fungi? I thought there was a slight yet noticeable mushroom characteristic peaking through the hops, earth, and smoke.

Bottle shared by alexsdad06. Poured black color with a large frothy tan head that lasted and produced good lacing. Moderate to heavy complex toasted malt and hop aroma. Medium to full body with a slick texture and soft carbonation. Medium to heavy toasted dark bittersweet flavor with a medium to heavy dark bittersweet finish of moderate to long duration. This is a very good beer.

End part of a 500ml bottle, shared by alexsdad06. Very dark brown / red color. Nearly totally black. Some pale bits of sediment visible in the body. Good thin brown head. Very nice nose on this... Herbal, earthy hops. Some hints of coffee in there. Lightly ashy. Some good roast, more coffee in the nose. Dark chocolate, and some burnt malts. Lightly spicy. Moderate to bigger bitter taste, with a dry finish. Bigger body. Smooth, kind of soft, lighter carbonation, more dry finish. Good black IPA. I was kind of worried about this one, but it’s definitely satisfying. Good, bigger flavor... Especially for the 7.5% ABV. Has the flavor of a double black IPA.

Un nez de grains rôtis englués de résine de pins. Le liquide est rond et simple, chocolaté et herbacé avec une pointe d’amertume vive. ,

My Bottom Line:
This velvety brew develops a complex array of flavors from chocolate to pine, from citrus fruit to roast and vanilla.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A ring of foam circles the blackness.
-The body was sweeter than the average Black IPA’s.
-Alcohol is strangely apparent in the nose and flavor profile. As if this was barrel-aged, or really more powerful than the advertised 7.5%.
-The grain bill and potent hops are harmonious throughout.

On tap at Prohibition Pig.

Backlog: Bottle bought at Systembolaget when it was available. Decent black IPA, slightly unfairly balanced towards the black malt aromas though.

500ml bottle in a tulip. Pours black with a lacy, beige head. Aroma of citrusy and floral hops, roasted and dark malts with light chocolate and coffee notes, plus hints of dough. Flavor such a great blend of everything. Average to smooth texture. A really good black IPA.

On tap at Henrik, Bergen. The colour is deep reddish brown to black with a light brown coffee-like medium head. Aroma of coffee, roast, dark chocolate, and nuts. Wonderful. Lots of roasted malt in the flavour as well along with coffee, hops and wet cardboard. More IPA-like in the aftertaste. Has a rich and slick mouth feel, and a heavy bitterness. The ale appears as a stout at first but more like an IPA in the end. Lots of bitterness and is pretty hefty.
