Bottle, batch #159. Opened today. Pours a murky red color with absolutely NO head. No carbonation. Sweet aroma of fruits, malt and raisins. Taste is very fruity - raisins, banana, grapes, caramel, sugar and of course malt. Very vinous and sweet with a slight alcohol burn in the finish. The port barrelling comes through very clearly. Aftertaste is sweet and bitter. Body is less than full but above medium.

Hell würziger, dezent alkoholischer Antrunk. Dezente helle Kräuternoten, , rund, für einen Barley Wine erstaunlich rund und vor allem nicht wie sonst oft süß und schwer. Geringe, für einen Barley Wine aber erwähnenswerte Hopfigkeit. Vanille, mild herb. Sehr gut! 11/13/12/13/12/12

In short: A boring lifeless syrupy sipper.
How: Bottle 330ml, corked & caged, consumed with some age on it but more more than 6 years before expiration date.
The look: Cloudy dirty-bronze body with no head to speak of.
In long: Nose is alcohol fumes, old wood barrels soaked by some kind of hard-liquor, cardboard, overripe fruits. In mouth the beer feels pretty lifeless, syrupy mouthfeel with minimal carbonation. Sweet jam made with overripe red fruits, caramel, cardboard, sherry, old wood, port wine, alcohol heat. Consumed 6.5 years before expiration date but my bottle showed signs of oxidation and quite a bit of maderisation. Not offensive per say, strangely this 12% wasn’t even aggressive enough to be offensive, it was just very boring. Pretty sad to think it took centuries of wars and genocides so we can arrive at a point where I can spend my days typing on a keyboard in a cubicle to acquire currency that I then exchange for a beer like this.

Bottle batch 159, best before 02-2020, thanks Papsø. Clear chestnut brown with a small off white head that quickly vanishes leaving just a rim of foam. Caramel, dark dried fruits, port wine, light wood, brown sugar, light cocoa. Medium body, medium sweet and bitter, near flat carbonation, a bit thin oily texture. Pretty soft with no alcohol showing. Light sweet finish with lingering oxidized notes. Very pleasant barley wine that is quite drinkable as it doesn’t feel big or boozy.

Dark orange pour. Smaller sized, sparkling and lively and fairly quick disappearing off white to light beige foamy head on top of a hazy almost brown colored beer.
Aroma is a strange mix: there’s rotten wood, old plums with dust and iron, some raisin, oat, alcohol, some berries, leather, light vinous notes, earth, tabacco, hint of vanilla, toffee and some plums.
Flavours of old wet darker wood, malts, dust, earth, some port, alcohol, malts, porridge, some berries, bourbon, vanilla, hint of wet cellar, liquorice wood, some toast, hay and cream.
Aftertaste is a mix of bitters, malts, wood, porridge, liquorice wood, warmth, alcohol, honey, earth and light spicy liquor notes.
Low carbo, spicy yet soft mouthfeel, full body and a creamy texture.
Rotten wood dominates, unbalance it, but there’s also some bice things to discover. Strange beer, did not expect this!

Sampled at THE FESTIVAL 2013 in Maine with Andrew, Jay and Kramer. Pours a deep, dark mahogany body with dark brown head and minor lacing. Aroma is vanilla and rich caramel candy, dark fruit, light sweet chocolate, oak and booze. Mouthfeel is medium to full with rich notes of brown sugar, vanilla, caramel syrup, dark fruit, chocolate, oak, molasses and booze. This and the pale ale were the stand outs for me.

(sample at tasting with Mark, Kasper and Sandra) Pours a semi-clear dark amber with little white head. Decent retention. Aroma is port wine, a bit of toffee and malt. Oily texture, medium carbonation, full body and a sweet finish. Flavour is moderately sweet with barrel notes. Pleasant but probably even more enjoyable in the winter.

Pours a clear dark amber with no head. Smells richly of port or cognac. Tastes sweet, somewhat bitter, but as an undertone. Pine. Pretty much like drinking cognac.

Bottle @ home, batch # 159. Pours very dark amber with a very fast fading offwhite head. Aroma of malt, caramel, port, dark fruits, oak, light oxidation, alcohol. Flavor is rather sweet with malt, caramel, ripe red grapes, raisins, port, oak, some booze. Medium body, soft carbonation, nice warming alcoholic finish. Nice one. 290413
