English: As winter comes to an end Galanthus Nivalis is a messenger for warmer and better times, winter requires a robust beer so we created this Barley Wine in typical English style like a signal that spring is coming. Galanthus Nivalis also has enough substance for you to warm yourselves on even the cold spring nights - otherwise it would not have been a genuine Amager Brewery beer.
In the glass Galanthus Nivalis is a warm amber colour with a creamy off-white head the aroma is full of rich caramel whilst the taste is rich and malty with notes of caramelised apples. There is a clear imprint of the 13 months in port casks, giving a soft and slightly oxidized edge, the alcohol you can hardly feel the heat is just gentle and pleasant.
Ingredients: Water, barley malt, wheat malt, candy sugar, hops and yeast.

Pours a clear dark amber with no head. Smells richly of port or cognac. Tastes sweet, somewhat bitter, but as an undertone. Pine. Pretty much like drinking cognac.

Bottle @ home, batch # 159. Pours very dark amber with a very fast fading offwhite head. Aroma of malt, caramel, port, dark fruits, oak, light oxidation, alcohol. Flavor is rather sweet with malt, caramel, ripe red grapes, raisins, port, oak, some booze. Medium body, soft carbonation, nice warming alcoholic finish. Nice one. 290413

Batch #159 corked and caged 37.5cl green glass bottle opened with a whimper and then poured out with a murky mahogany body supporting a weak mocha head leaving behind sludgy dark yeast at the bottom of the bottle. The aroma offers up brown sugar covered prunes, sweet raisins and plum juice as well as some barrel notes of booze, faint wood and yeast. The taste starts out as brown sugar covered prunes and raisin swamp the early flavor then pick up a Quad like molasses covered spicy yeast quality. Beyond those flavors I find murmurs of booze, a bit of wood and then nectar like dark fruity sweetness taking this into the after taste. This has a really nice mix of notes creating a pleasing harmony.

0.375l corked bottle #159 from Bierkoning. This is a deep cloudy rusty-red brown one with a near non existing quickly sidesticking bubbly transparent top. Lovely nose with loads of barreled-aromas. Thick sweet and glazed fruity with caramel, slightly sour red currants, traces of tobacco and a strong vinous port wine touch. Smells really nice this! It’s really gentle on the carbonation - near flat actually but some soft prickling on back of the tongue and the mouthfeel is surprisingly soft and almost a bit watery. Lovely flavors though! It’s a English style barley with a lovely spicy woody and vinous touch. The port shines through all the soft herbal and spicy flavors. Not overwhelmingly sweet in any way, actually a bit of the opposite and it has a good amount of oxidation on the taste. Ends with a nice warming and peppery aftertaste A great flavorful little treat full of flavor. 24.01.2013

Ulkonäöltä samean ruskea ja niukkavaahtoinen. Haju on käyneen viininen, hapan, marjainen, voinen ja vähän vaniljaa. Maku on suklainen, hieman alkoholinen, maltainen, ruisleipäinen, makea ja hieman hapan. Suutuntuma täyteläinen. Kokonaisuutena jopa pilaantuneen hajuinen, mutta hienon makuinen olut, kannatti kokeilla,

Dark mahogany with no head. Superb flowery aromad, vinous notes, dark fruits, a bit plummy. Almost full body, vinous, long warming finale of cocoa and coca cola. Loved it. Tasted side by side with a westvleteren , I think I prefered this one!

My Bottom Line:
Cranberry jam, wood, oxidation and alcohol warmth meld before leaving the palate with a surprisingly lean, subtle finish.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-There is barely a ring of foam around the graceful plum-like mahogany.
-Caramel notes are light for a Barley Wine.
-Peach skin and apple fruitiness also appears here and there.
-Carbonation is very low.
-The finish is a tad too storyless for my tastes in contemplative strong brews.

Bottle.

(Bottle) Clear brownish read colour with brief, beige head. Fruity, vinous nose with dried fruit, caramel, red berries, port wine and oak wood. Malty, fruity taste with notes of caramel, red fruit, port wine, a touch of chocolate, hints of oak wood and a slightly vinous finish with a warming touch of alcohol. There’s a slight oxidization, but that just seems to add to the complexity and balance. Almost full body, with a certain caramel sweetness. Quite well balanced and very taste. Excellent beer.

Bottle 375ml @ Fairbar, Aarhus, Denmark
Pours dark brown with a small off-white head. Aroma has notes of malt, caramel, oak, vanilla, alcohol and floral. Taste is heavy sweet and light bitter with a long caramel, oak and warming finish. Body is full, texture is oily, carbonation is soft.
