50cl bottle from Geers, batch 454, BB 06/2015. Brune foncée presque noire, col collant moka.

Bottle at the Hoppin’ Frog Tasting Room. Pours jet black with a medium beige head that diminishes gradually to a film. Partial rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of roast malt, dark chocolate and hops. Medium-bodied with flavors of charred malt, earthy hops and dark chocolate. The finish is roasty with a malty rye and hops aftertaste. Pretty good all around.

22oz bottle pours a fairly inky black with some foamy, lacing, brown head. Nose is interesting, roasted mushroom, malted milk balls, some pencil lead, some burnt root veg, black strap molasses, a little burnt matchstick. Flavor has some cherry cola, some pencil lead, heavy molasses, burnt caramel, lots of mushroom, a little lacto sugar. Lightly roasty, malty finish. Smooth.

> Bitter, dark chocolate powerful RIS but perhaps shelf damaged

[ Bottle ][ Holiday Wine Cellar ][ 50cl ][ ? ][ Pizza Boy Snifter ][ 4/14/14 ]
>> Ink pour with medium to low semi-rocky espresso foam. Red highlights. Nose is bitter dark chocolate wedge, Godiva liquor, chocolate mousse, red cedar, camphor, really rich. Taste is a tad lemon tart for me, but it is still fairly silky, low ash, and big on bitter melted dark chocolate. It is robust, dense, and never sweet or thin. Palate is chalky, dusty, medium bodied. Pretty good, but perhaps a bit shelf rotted.

>!< fairly dusty, mild lemon, woody tannic

A savory, dry and rich imperial stout with strong bitterness. Full-bodied beefy mouth feel delivered with soft, low carbonation. Peppery phenols and trace of alcohol burn in a bitter and dry finish. Angular and sharp.

The beer is near black with a half inch of dense beige head. The aroma is more Danish than American, offering rich, roasted, dark malts and chocolates with a hint of smoke. A delicious beer. These two breweries both make great imperial stouts, so it’s no surprise that this collaboration turned out well. Smooth on the palate with soft carbonation. A delicious beer.

Bottle. Head is initially average sized, frothy, dark brown, fully lasting. Body is black (opaque, flashlight tested). Aroma is moderately to heavily malty (roasted grain, coffee, dark chocolate), lightly to moderately hoppy (flowers, grapefruit), with notes of vanilla, charred wood, hint of blackberry. Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly acidic, moderately to heavily bitter. Medium to full body, creamy/velvety texture, lively carbonation, moderately alcoholic. A happy surprise, considering both Amager and Hoppin’ Frog are pretty hit-and-miss breweries. Both have produced some good strong porter/stouts, but both have produced some clumsy messes in that department too. I’m kinda surprised this is "only" 8%, considering both breweries like high-octane stuff, but it’s just about the perfect sweet spot for a beer of this kind. It’s not syrupy or overly sweet, nor is it overly hoppy or bitter. And perhaps the biggest shock of all, the hops are just floral and citrusy, no suggestion of raw resin to my nose at all. Lovely lasting head, first-pour opacity, and a luxurious mouthfeel (without being too viscous to enjoy the act of drinking it)...I wouldn’t say it’s quaffable, of course, but it certainly doesn’t suffer the usual boozy sugar-bomb mistakes of so many of its brethren. This is just a solid, no-frills strong stout, but done well (and frankly there’s not enough examples in this vein...Green Flash Double Stout comes to mind). Enticing, balanced, rich and tasty...major kudos to both breweries for not making yet another 12-15% kitchen sink (bourbon barrel, 10-malt, 10-hop, chocolate nibs, vanilla beans, etc., etc.) atrocity. It’s ultimately too pricey at $9/500mL, but hey, at least it’s really good, so I won’t grumble too much.
