Danish: Amager Hr.

English: In his original form Mr. Frederiksen was a potent, forceful fellow with some sharp edges, he has in this incarnation heavily taken to his female side. The 12 months spent ageing in port wine casks has subdued his temperament and created a different soft and rounded beer, he has however lost none of his virility to which the slight increase in alcohol to 11% will testify.
This beer is the blackest of the black with a creamy light brown head, which leaves the finest lacing around the glass. The effect of the port ageing can be felt most clearly on the nose which is soft and rounded - try sending it round the table in the place of dessert at the next family party. The body is still plump with plenty of roasted malt and notes of dark, bitter chocolate.
Wooden barrels add a rustic and slightly oxidized edge to this beer - just as in the best port wines. In contrast, the 12 months in wood has not done away with Amager’s familiar bitterness, as with the original Mr. Frederiksen flavours come both from the hard roasted malts and a generous addition of hops, the built- alcohol makes your fireplace superfluous, you can warm yourself by the radiant heat of Port aged Mr. Frederiksen alone.
Ingredients: Water, barley malt, wheat malt, oats, hops and yeast

375mL bottle, courtesy of Nisse666 (thanks a lot, Tomas), pours black with a medium tan / brown head. Aroma of port wine barrel, subdued roasted malt, and charcoal -- very heavy and liqueurish on the nose. Flavour is dominated by the port barrels, bringing out notes of port liqueur and red wine, followed alcohol and subdued roasted malts. The port barrels have totally overtaken this, and not for the better, as boozy liqueur notes dominate making it a bit difficult to drink. The complexity of the base beer seems to be obscured by the barrel aging. Still, nice effort, but not too enthralling.

August 25, 2012 - 375ml green corked & caged bottle shared by MesAndSim - not sure of the year, I think it has been laid down for a while. Pours brown-black with a fairly large creamy slightly frothy tan/light brown head - plenty of lacing, and even legs (4+). Aroma - dark and roasty - dry nutmeat, table cream, alcohol, dates & figs & even some black sour cherry- a bit boozy, but so appealing. Taste is a bit more acidic, the tart dark fruit comes to the fore, the roast is less apparent, although it does seem to have a brandy and chocolate mousse character gaining prominence - oily and I really get a lot of the tawny/crusty port, which is something that pushes my buttons. A little alcoholic, slick, mild carbonation, creamy mouthfeel, a bit sticky and thick, finishes with just a hint of scorched cork - lovely lovely lovely - this is really up my street, thank you so much for the share, Mes.

(Rating #4272)

Bottle shared by Fred. Thick black pour with brown head. Aroma is soft and chocolatey, lots of vanilla oak notes, port is detectable, molasses and a bit of alcohol. Taste is rich and in appearance sweet although the beer finishes pretty dry for the style. Quite chocolatey with some sweet but not at all acidic port notes. Smooth and creamy palate, light cocoa powder feel. Quite good.

375ml bottle pours an oily opaque black with some thin eggshell head. Big nose, boozy scotch, Islay scotch, some blue cheese, coffee, a little vinegar. Flavor is sweet, brown sugar, red grape, prune, raisin, a little sake, some light soy, port obviously. Full bodied, salty finish. Better than I expected.

/9/11/10/14/10

37,5 cl bottle @ Olutravintola Pikkulintu. Rated on 4.12.2010
Aroma is rather nice with roastiness, some oaky notes and hints of vanilla. Flavour has really roasted malt, oaky and red wine notes and some licorice. I liked the aroma but the flavour was a bit disappointment – just like with the original Hr. Frederiksen.
