3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 3fourths (6950) - Straßgiech, Bavaria, - MAY 21, 2012train bottle rating. dark pour with a cocoa-colored foam of a head. young oak nose is moderatley tannin-heavy with sweet port / sherry malt character and moderately strong alcohol. mild roast and chicory seem muted by both sharp wine barrel and alcohol. green coffee bean is present and almost becomes more of a bell pepper note with time. vinous and oily texture; medium body; heavy warmth of alcohol. frothy natural carbonation is both pleasant in it’s release of black pepper and flint-like phenols, and a bit brash and mineral-heavy when warmer. ink, soy sauce and licorice spice malt develop over the life of the glass. overall a noble effort and better than I expect when I see wine barrel imperial stout.

Bottle. A dense, tan head of moderate size sits on top of a dark brown to black body. Rather vinous aroma, with lots of chocolate and coffee, roasted malts and molasses hints. More like dried fruits than red wine actually. Surprisingly thin on the palate, I remember Hr Frederiksen to be more full-bodied than this. Some warmth. Lots of coffee, chocolate and roasted malts in the flavor. Lasting finish with some warmth but mostly it’s influenced by the dark malts. Nice indeed, but prefer the regular edition. 130504

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 gyllenbock (2967) - Stockholm, SWEDEN - MAR 31, 2013
Bottle, bought at Systembolaget in 2011. Rating 2700.
Black with a tan head. Quite weak aroma of light roasted malt, oak, red wine and coffee. About the same in the taste. Vinous with a light body. Drinkable but not that exciting.
2.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20 SirLimpsalot (1611) - SWEDEN - MAR 31, 2013
@Eddan: lite svag doft av kaffe, fat och lite sura toner. Smaken har jag lite svårt för. Mycket kaffe men med en sur underton av fat och "dålig" rödvin. Tunn kropp men lång eftersmak.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 maneliquor (1559) - Perth, AUSTRALIA - MAR 12, 2013
Thanks to Papsoe for this one! Pours black with a smidgin of a sinisterly dark tan head which quickly disappears. Aroma shows caramel, pepper, heavy cocoa nibs and red wine. Vanilla and red wine mingle in the taste with heavy, bitter-heavy cocoa powder. Sweetness is overrun by bitterness. A touch of pepper on the finish with the red wine. Solid stuff, very complex
4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 Sigmund (4177) - Tau, NORWAY - MAR 10, 2013
250 ml (though the label says 375 ml) bottle, from the brewery. ABV is 10.5%. Batch #300. Pitch black colour, moderate tan head. Strong roasty aroma with distinct notes of oak and red wine. Rich and warming mouthfeel. The flavour is oaky and roasty, with notes of red wine, dark dried fruits, coffee, chocolate and liquorice. Impressive stuff.
