mreusch (461), Olathe, Kansas, USA Sep 17, 2007 BIG THANKS to my friend from Copenhagen, sunevdj (Thanks Sune!). Batch 05, #211/400. Pours an absolutely beautiful used motor oil, black and syrupy, with a towering three finger creamy dark brown head; stellar lacing. Aroma is an excellent blend of espresso, bittersweet chocolate, roasty malts, light vanilla and a definite citrus hops presence. Wow, the flavor brings a notable bitterness of hops (!), bittersweet chocolate, and a good dose of freshly pulled espresso. The alcohol is completely undetectable. There is a lasting bitterness that lingers quite a while from all that coming @ you, but it seems to work quite well together, providing a full and creamy mouthfeel with moderate carbonation. Quite a unique take on the style IMO, and very enjoyable. Thanks again, Sune, for the chance to try this well crafted beer!
FlacoAlto (2147), Tucson, Arizona, USA Oct 15, 2008 Bottle 22 / 400, Batch 5, Best By Date March 2010; Sampled 2nd RB Tucson Tasting, September 2008
Pours with a darkish, brown colored head that sits on top of a simply, opaque, black beer. There is lots of roast malt character in the aroma with notes of dark cocoa, darkly roasted coffee beans, and a finish that almost has a smoky note to it with its concentrated malt aromas. There is a touch of earthiness to the nose as well as some light notes similar to burnt, dried figs.
This is lightly sweet tasting at first, which accentuates some dark cocoa notes, but a substantial roast character quickly kicks in and counters the sweetness with ample coffee notes and a very deep, roast bitterness that dominates the finish. The roast character accentuates quite a bit of charcoal-like acidity and some harsh, acrid notes. Alcohol definitely adds to the harshness in the finish as well. This is a bit more enjoyable than I may be making out to be, but it can be quite harsh in the finish at time; ultimately the roast character seems to be a bit more than the base malt character can support (but that is probably just me). andersand (27), Sweden Oct 12, 2008 Nice black with a small light brown head. Very bright and oily aroma. Very inviting and complex. Very tasty, medium bodied, oily imperial stout. Allot of caramell, chocolate, coffe, hops and a nice fruity finish. Long roasted aftertaste. Great beer, almost too drinkable. asheft (979), Marburg, Germany Oct 10, 2008 [on tap at EBF 2008]
Roasty sherry aroma with a little oak vanilla and notes of ethanol, hazelnut, and scotch tape. Thick black appearance with lasting, lacy foam. Flavour is a blast of warm, coffee, roast, vinous, almost red wine bitterness. Slightly medicinal. Medium body and dry with a lasting dark malt bitterness. Pinball (605), Allerød, Denmark Oct 9, 2008 batch115.
pours totally black, setles black with a brown head, rather thick.
aroma: a little too weak compared to my expectations, but the aroma is great. coffee, licorice, roasted stuff. not much alc.
flavor : extremely well balanced, roasted stuff, licorice, aftertaste bends the taste towards a combination of dark chocolate and roasted stuff.
palate : bubbles up in my mouth a little, which i don’t like, but palate is rather good except for this.
the fantastic balance makes it a joy to take sip after sip, trying to figure what different flavors are in there. still, i think there are better imp stouts that have lower ratings than this one. Bockyhorsey (2033), Mesa, Arizona, USA Oct 8, 2008 Sampled @ Tucson Tasting. Good roasted chocolate aroma that hits the nose. Whis more interest for me any way was the black body and the vanilla swirle in the tan cramy head.. Good chocolate creamy flavor. A roasty coco aftertaste good stout. Thanks to either Sabastian or Craig for this one.
