COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION

English: ”I rate – therefore I am”. These very few words were for many years the simple governing rule for Hr. Papsø to live by. For years he would seek out exotic and faraway places like Onetaka, Windischeschenbach, San Diego – yes even Køge – in his constant quest for the holy grail: that perfect beer. What started as a way of spending time while being romatically involved with a certain girl at a youth hostel in Newcastle, NSW turned into a 25 year long passion of rating every beer he encountered. With his faithful companinon – Mr. Pink – and his set of gold coated tasting thimbles always ready for action Hr. Papsø has now reached 25.000 ratings on the world’s most renowned beer rating portal www.ratebeer.com. And that for sure calls for a beer to celebrate. “Hr. Papsø In Black” is such a beer combining three of the things Hr. Papsø really loves in a beer: that cool darkness, a fresh and crisp dryhopping and high drinkability. Be calm – be cool. Enjoy.

Bottle: Poured a black color ale with a large light brown foamy head with OK retention and some light lacing. Aroma of roasted malt with spicy hops presence is a bit off from the style. Taste is also a mix between some roasted malt notes with light hops presence with some light spicy notes which don’t really fits in that well. Body is light with good carbonation. Not bad but still a notch below other example of the style. Not sure if bottle is old or what but Simcoe hops really didn’t come through.

Dark beer with ruby glints when held against the light. Huge foamy tan head. It took a while to coax the beer into the glass. Green hop and puffed grain nose. Very carbonated. Dark wet grains, chocolate ripe fruit, brown sugar, puffed wheat and burnt toast in the finish.

From a 500ml bottle on 12/5/2014 (batch number 606, BB 05/2014). Pours close to black with a big tan head. The aroma is a combo of roasted malt and fruity hops. Take a sip and you get some sweet caramel and toffee, stone fruit, followed by big firm bitterness which alternates between resin and grapefruit and roasty/burnt/coffee notes. The body is medium and it’s somewhat over carbed, which is the only real knock. A very tasty black IPA which could use just a few less bubbles.

Bottle courtesy of AndySnow IIRC. Pours reddish blackish with a huge frothy beige head that slowly dissipates while leaving some soapy trace on the glass. Smell is malty and tiny fruity with roasted malts, sweetened dark roast coffee, burnt cookies, pine needles, resinous wood, grapefruit juice, bitter chocolate and orange zest. Taste is slightly sweet, bitter and malty with roasted malts, burnt cookies, dark roast coffee, grapefruit juice, ripe tropical fruits, orange zest, pine needles, resinous wood, bitter chocolate and ash. Mouthfeel is round, soft, astringent and medium bodied. Finish is bitter with roasted malts, dark roast coffee, pine needles, resinous wood, grapefruit rinds and unripe tropical fruits.

Fresh hop aroma mixed with dark roasted malts. Resin, grapefruit and quite fresh. I love Black IPA aromas. Taste is nice, but expected a bit fuller palate and with more outspoken roasted flavours. (50cl bottle from Beer City)
