From a bottle poured a murky brown with little to no head. Aroma best described as dank. No wonder they called Hamlet the melancholy Dane! This holiday ale seems truly uninspired as these types go.

Bottle @ home from my rotbox. 2008 Abbey Dubbel matured for 7 years in my parent’s closet. Dark brown appearance with a moderate sized brown head that dissipates quickly. Some oxidation / cardboard notes in the nose along with molasses, nuts, caramel, fudge, and a little bit of pine. The body has thinned out. Flavor is pecans, honey, and molasses. It’s also oxidized. Low bitterness and moderate to moderate plus sweetness. Honestly, it’s not as sweet as expected. It also tastes better than expected for a seven year old dubbel. I wouldn’t recommend aging it but it isn’t too bad.

Foam is really nice, persistent and full-bodied. Good aromas of fruit and malt. Taste typical Belgian with clear signs of fruit, such as blackberries, raisins and a little orange. It has lots of Christmas touch and a very great richness. Hoppy bitterness is gentle but present and helps to substantiate the aforementioned fruity whole. Without doubt the best Christmas beer I so far have tasted in years.

Purchased this 2008 bottle, looking in very good condition, today: surprising to see a bunch of these on the shelf. I’d guess a case got lost for several years. Still OK? ... a solid seal, decent looks and good flavor all indicate yes. Poured into goblet, this ale is dark brown with ruby-brown highlights when held to the light. The tan head soon recedes to a durable full ring that leaves the glass nicely coated upon tipping. Aroma: not good at first, but after just a few minutes it emits a fine aroma of toffee, nuts, light spices and some bready notes. Continues to change as it warms. Taste: more fruity and less nutty than the aroma. lightly bitter; dates and other dark fruits with herbal hops, medium and dark malts, and a bit of dark chocolate. A trace of smoke and coffee in the finish and aftertaste. Feel: full bodied; very smooth; soft, light carbonation. The alcohol is fairly well hidden with a wild mix of bitterness to roasty malt flavors. Overall: worth returning to the store to get more of their aged and discounted bottles.

500 ml bottle from Ryan and Casey Liquors Greenfield, MA. Trappist glass shows a deep brown color. Nose is pleasant aroma of malt, dates, plums, and an Earthy malt. Tastes of toffee, hops, dried dark fruits, candi sugar, and raisins. Big dark fruit notes. Earthy taste lingers slightly. Carbonation is nearly gone at this point. Still really nice Dubbel.

Bottle. Brown in color with a medium beige head. Aroma of figs, caramel/toffee, spicy Belgian yeast esters and mild alcohol. Taste is sweet dark fruits and toffee with some light tart yeast and roast. Medium body with soft carbonation. Nice beer, has held up fairly well with age.

The aroma is rather strait froward with a toasted malt porter profile of coffee and chocolate. The appearance is dark brown with a medium head that falls. The taste is like the aroma. The palate is thin. Overall not too much about this beer says seasonal special.
