Vuf!

English: The concept of the “ale hound” is well established throughout Western culture, and unsurprisingly the latest canine research shows that dogs are extremely appreciative of beer. A recent dissertation takes this one step further and documents the preference of individual breeds for specific beer styles. The Pekingese, for instance, are into Cola Radlers; Rottweilers like dipping their snouts in a hefty Imperial Stout; whereas Beagles have not evolved beyond the Strong Lager stage. But then there is the one breed that is dearest to our hearts, because it’s large, kind, and often quite well fed – much like the staff here at Amager Bryghus. We are, of course, talking about the Labrador Retriever. These are dogs, which – like us – simply LOVE a well-hopped IPA, and just keep lapping it up till they slip into a hop-induced coma. In honor of the Lab we have brewed their very favorite beer: a fat Imperial IPA, jam-packed with hops virtually drooling over the rim of the glass. Woof!

Månedens fadøl januar 2014.

Danish double IPA from a 50 cl bottle with a dog theme - apparently Amager wants us to believe that dogs prefer certain beer styles based on their breed... Thick ’membranous’ lacing, off-white, densely packed, medium thick head over a warm and deep orange golden coloured, clear beer. Dank, perfumey, ’tropical’ and mouth watering aroma of tangerine, freshly squeezed and unsugared orange juice, pink grapefruit flesh, pine-scented air freshener, smoky overripe papaja, persimmon, cigarette tobacco, barbecue spices, bitter honey, honey-glazed spareribs, fresh toast, biscuit, lemon blossom, pink pepper, passion fruit liqueur, curcuma, bitter herbs. Crisp, cleanly fruity onset, moderately sweetish with a sourish undercurrent, reminiscent of pineapple, mandarin and passion fruit, softly carbonated, lightly minerally, evolving into a slick but ’full’, lean malt body, biscuity and a tad nutty with a toasted edge which smoothly joins a long, aromatic, drying hop finish, thoroughly but at the same time gently bittering and yielding a whole array of intensely fragrant New World hop aromas retronasally, varying from mandarin over grapefruit to spruce; bitterness lasts long, but, as said, remains quite friendly and delicate for a DIPA, leaving room for juicy maltiness to pass through, accompanied by a glow of warming, gin-like but otherwise very well hidden alcohol. One of the more ’friendly’ and elegant, but in all typical examples of the style, producing lovely exotic and pungent aromas and carrying enough malt sweetness to support the hoppiness, which is far less harsh and more gentle than is often the case in this style. A thing of beauty, like many of Amager’s beers, and I’m sure any dog, labrador or not, will agree with me.

50 cl bottle poured in to a Snifter. Batch # 1325. Hazy, amber-golden colour with a thin off-white head. Fruity aroma with tangerine, peaches, citrus fruits, caramel malts, a toasted note. Taste is bitter. Medium to full body with a creamy texture and a soft carbonation. Finishes dry and bitter with citrus fruits and tropical nuances. Didn’t track any Labrador, trough. Lovely IIPA.

Bottle @ home shared with Dutchdrebus. Clear light orange golden color, decent sized off-white head. Aroma is lovely: some malts, pine, resin, resinous hops. Taste malts, hops, resin, pine, resinous and piney hops, resinous and piney bitter. A real Imperial IPA like it should be full of resinous and piney hops and nicely bitter. Lovely! Medium to full body, a bit sticky texture, suitabl carbonation.
