Bottled. Murky reddish-brown beer with minimal rim of creamy foam. Really intense aroma is a complex mix of dark fruits like dried plums, raisins, dried apricot and berryish alcohol. Strong earthy/woody note with dark chocolate and loads of heavily toasted sugar syrup. Heavy, almost oily maltiness is not as caramelly as first impressions would suggest. It is more like liquid bread and juice squeezed from dried plums. Finishes dryish fruity with woody bitterness, herbal notes and alcoholic warmth. Caramel seems to evolve in to something towards vanilla. Full bodied, low carbonation. Very good.

Bottled. Pours brown in color with a small bubbly head. Sweetish malty notes, some dough, slightly burnt toffee notes too in aroma. Honey and dark sweets in taste. Some burnt grainy notes in finish.

UPDATED: SEP 15, 2013 Bottle 25 CL. Pours murky brown black with white lacing head. Notes of syrup, licorice, toffee. Interesting, one of the best barley wines I have tasted.

Sample from bottle. Dark brown. Salty licorice. Earthy herbyness, fresh oak. A sharp hot beer.

Thanks to blutt59 for sharing this bottle. Pours an orange brown with an off-white head. The aroma is full of toffee, caramel and floral notes. The flavor is similar. I get a lot of toffee, grass, brown sugar and alcohol. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Bottle @ 2nd tuesday tasting. Best before 2010. Pours hazy orange with a small, fading white head. Aroma is sweet, "drop" and quite some oxidation. Taste is sweet malts, oxidation and licorice. Not a fan of barley wines and this one did not age well.

Bottle, bbd September 2010. Aroma has a dusty backbone, some madeira and the age is definitely noticeable. Flavor is quite sweet with a even some licorice in there. Short finish with some tobacco and leather. Decent.

Bottle at the May De Molen monthly tasting. Poured a hazy chestnut brown with a thin white head. The aroma is rather odd and smells a little like boiling cabbage! The flavour is strong bitter with liquorice and resin. The bitterness hits the palate quickly and becomes a little unpleasant in the finish.
