COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION

English: Didrik Crappe was a Copenhagen lad who set sail to Tranquebar in the early 19th Century to establish a herring meal factory in this exotic Danish colony. He suffered terribly from indigestion because of his mother’s home cooking, esp. her extremely spicy chicken curries that he was forced to eat several times a week. Some historians maintain that the whole business of founding a herring meal factory was just an excuse to get away from his mother’s pots and pans. There is a legend saying that Didrik posted himself in the bow of the clipper carrying him away from his beloved hometown, and exclaimed "No more rice and curry for this fair Dane!" But the story has a happy end. Thanks to the fine lager brewed locally in Tranquebar, Didrik’s indigestion was cured, and in fact he soon established his own brewery out there, creating a beer so tasty that rumors of it flew all the way back to Denmark. Perhaps the herring meal was the secret ingredient that distinguished Didrik’s brew from all others. Anyhow, soon clippers carrying nothing but barrels of his product were leaving Tranquebar for Copenhagen every day of the week. Thus the Indian Pale Lager was born.

A crisp and dry Pale Lager with a base of only pilsener malts. Hopped – and dry-hopped – with Amarillo, Cascade and Citra. No rice or curry was added.

Unusual pale lager from Amager with a lovely historical background story to it. Hazy greenish yellow blonde colour, thick (hops-enhanced) and frothy, snow white, creamy head with impressive, almost arty lacing. Aroma reminds me of an American IPA at first: citrussy hops abound, impressions of lemon peel, pink grapefruit, freshly cut orange, honey, old cheese, buttermilk, celery, thyme, apple, peach, soap, pineapple slices in syrup, sweat, chicken soup. Crisp onset with a refinedly sweet and aromatic vanilla touch among more fruits than expected from a lager (apple, lemon, orange, pineapple, pear); fairly sharp, minerally carbonation with a very quenching effect, smooth and slick pale malt sweetness, a bit bready, yeasty, with citrussy and spicy hop bitterness setting in early and only increasing towards the finish. Ends with long, spicy, drying and citrussy hops, through which some subtle yeastiness still shows. The IPA version of a premium lager, I’d argue - admittedly the hops do all the work here, but for a hophead like me, this is totally enjoyable. Probably among the best bottom-fermented beers I tasted so far and very American in style (the 65 cl bottle was already a hint). Man, Scandinavia has truly become a haven for beer afficionados in the past two decades...

On tap @ Mikkeller San Francisco. Slightly hazed golden pour with a white head. Nose is quite heavy on the lime and lemon aromas. A lot of cracker, straw, and orange zest as well. The flavor is kind of tangy but has a sort of oxidized thing going on. Some sweet peach and a bit of sour citrus. A lot of lime in particular. Quite heavy on the straw and grass. As it warms up, has a nice tropical fruit character to it.
