COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Slainte!

English: Wee Heavy, Scotch or Scottish Ale – to be honest we don’t really care. We wanted to take the best of British brewing traditions and add a subtle edge of peaty smoke for that special Islay feeling. Many people have asked us if we took that feeling so far that we actually DID wear kilts during the brewing of this beer. Well, we honestly believe that not all questions necessarily need an answer. But yes, photos DO exist. And no, they shall never be revealed… If you firmly believe that all British-style ales are low in alcohol and low in carbonation then Smoking Scotsman will prove you wrong. This is a beer to be savoured in small sips in front of a roaring fire back home at the manor – preferably with a big plate of haggis. Sláinte! – or whatever.

Ingredienser: Vand, Malte: Pale, Special B, Crystal, Peated, Dehusked Chocolate, Humle: East Kent Goldings, Gær: Edinburgh Ale

My Bottom Line:
Sweet caramel, candied fruit and peat smoke are polished into a most silky mouthfeel in this classy Scotch Ale.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A sheet of foam tops the misty mahogany.
-Alcohol warmth perfectly offsets the rich residual sugars.
-This makes for a great dessert, just like a crème brûlée.
-Malt flavors are beautifully defined. This is not just another sweet, heavy Scotch Ale...

Bottle.

Hazy almond brown ale wearing a nice off-white crown. Appetizing looks for a beer so strong. Extremely malty nose. When pouring, I was taken aback by the very high level of fruitiness in there. A closeup revealed it was not so bad actually, whisky-like peat and generous caramelized cakebread complementing the apricot/peachy fruit foreground. As with many very strong ales with a smoked component, it seems to develop an apple-like undertone that I don’t really appreciate. Gets more earthy closing onto the finish, but that’s a sweet beast, not necessarily sugary, but very sweet, almost candy-like and thick, oily/chewy to the point where I’d believe Oatmeal was a decent portion of the grist. Almost fortunately, the carbonation is a tad above average, cutting some slack to what would have otherwise been a shortcut to palate fatigue. Warming up, what felt like caramel initially now borders molasses territory, think bear paws molasses cookies, not complex enough to be captivating, but not unpleasant either and in any care, you take one for yourself when rewarding your kid with one. A very intense, strong and sweet Scotch Ale, but a totally honorable interpretation by these malt extraction experts. Scotch Ales really are not that easy to nail and I think one of the keys to my palate is, akin to a Doppelbock for instance, to procure multi-layered toasted flavours rather than blank crystal/caramel maltiness. Here, we’re about halfway.

Shared bottle at Cardinal. Pours clear dark ruby with a small tanned head. Aroma of berries and weak peat & smoke. Taste is sweet, almost cloying, sticky mouthfeel, not my cup of tea.

Amber, slightly unclear. Sweet aroma with hinta of peat. Something not quite refreshing about the taste, although this is almost hidden by the bitterness.

Dekkende kremet brunt skum. Fin gyllen amber farge. Smak av blåmuggost og røyk.

Bottle. A dense, finger-thick light beige head forms over an almost clear dark amber body. The aroma is quite sweetish, with prunes, some roasted notes, alcohol and a faint hint of pine cones. Definitely on the malty side. It’s full-bodied and soft on the palate, very low carbonation level, which is quite pleasant. Dried fruits, caramel, brown sugar, hints of peat in the flavor. Lasting sweet finish. Overall, too sweet, but it’s quite pleasant anyway. 131228
