Commercial Description:

English: Sundby Stout is a classic ”Stout” and yet it dares to be different and challenging. As soon as the beer is opened and you smell it, you sense that this stout smells differently than what you would expect. Late in the brewing process we have added the noble, American dried hops such as Nugget, Centennial, and Cascade, which provide flower-like notes that lay on top of the typical stout characteristics of burned malt that adds lightness and freshness to the beer. Sundby Stout appears dark as the night, while the head is dense, light brown – almost cappuccino-like creamy, as your tongue sense both malt sweetness and hints of bitter, dark chocolate and English liquorice. The sweetness, however, is rightfully challenged from the hard roasted malt and the split, un-malted and roasted barley, which both contribute to the “burned” touch of our stout.

Black colored body with a light tan head. The nose is light milk chocolate with some coffee roast. There is also some light hints of plum. The taste is lightly roasted with some coffee and cola flavors. There is also some raw soybean and milk chocolate in the finish. The body is lightly carbonated and that fits perfectly for this style. Oh man, this is very tasty and delicious with it’s roast character. My only complaint is that it is a little pricey.

Bottle (500ml). Shared with garthicus, via trade with glouglouburp. Black pour, lovely creamy average lasting mottled tan/beige head. Classic stout aroma - lightly herbal and milky, sort of coffee bean and sort of cocoa - very, very nice. Taste follows, a hint of cherry tartness, quite bitter in the finish. Light, creamy mouthfeel, quick sweetish malt finish, a dry herbal linger. Excellent normal stout.

Bottle... Pours almost black with a small, creamy, khaki head. Good retention. The aroma is straightforward; chocolate and coffee. Medium-bodied with modest carbonation. Nicely balanced. Chocolaty and roasty. Mocha, drying finish. Thanks to darkguardian for sharing the bottle!

In short: A moderately roasted stout, well hopped and emphasis on chocolate and coffee flavour. Good stuff.
How: Bottle 50cl. Age unknown, consumed a little before best-before date.
The look: Black body topped by a small tan head
In long: The nose is moderately roasted with a strong hint of black coffee. Taste is simplistic but still pleasant and it is dominated by roastiness and roasted coffee beans. Some chocolate, some vanilla and some milky notes make for a light chocolate ice-cream sensation. Low on fruity flavours. What I thought made this one very good was a generous hopping that added some interesting citrusy and green grass notes. Finish is moderately bitter with a light astringency and a mouth drying roastiness. An enjoyable session stout. A nice beer to kill time. That bastard deserves to die anyway for what it does to my body.

50 cl. bottle from Bieropholie, served at cellar temperature in a tulip glass.

App.: Deep brown-black with a decent mocha foam. Aroma: Slightly sour dark chocolate, black coffee, black licorice, grapes, molasses, blueberries, currants, some dark dried fruits, slightly ashen. Palate: Medium body, sparse effervescence. Flav.: Still tangy black coffee and dark chocolate, less sweet than the nose would suggest, fruity with berries and currants taking the lead, a bit of ashen burnt sugar, black licorice; dry with fair bitterness, a little alcohol and some unsweetened black licorice to finish.

A solid stout.
