English: For quite some time the Amager crew has been discussing this question: which person is the most rock’n’roll in the whole craft beer world - is it Barnaby Struve of Three Floyds or is it Todd Haug of Surly Brewing? In the end it wasn’t really all that difficult to decide since only Todd has played for Laura Dern in a David Lynch movie (yeah, Nicolas Cage was in that same movie, but since when did he count?) AND Todd plays the guitar in both a speed metal band and a stoner band. Add to that that Todd and his wife Linda are some of the nicest people to hang out with. So Todd, here’s to you: "Todd - The Axe Man" - a potent IPA loaded with fresh American aroma hops on a base of rich Golden Promise malt, Surly’s signature malt. Raise a glass to Todd, world class brewer - and master of the axe! Bonus facts about Todd: yes, he DID actually have a perm in his younger days (his wife confirms) and he does indeed love cats an awful lot.

Ingredienser: Vand. Malt: Golden Promise. Humle: Herkules, Citra, Mosaic. Gær: US-ale

Bottle from Mikkeller Webshop; hazy golden amber pour with a big frothy magnolia head, aroma has some melon, light pine, zesty tangerine, taste is equally zesty with some big orange notes, resinous pine, a hint of caramel, very good.

Pours an orange golden colour topped with average white head. Massive fruity nose which is formed by sweet fruits like passion fruit and peach but slightly grassy. Its taste is very different from how it smells. Tiny malty sweetness at first but dominated by hoppy bitterness very soon. I think it tastes fruity but it doesn’t. Finishing is dry with medium length.

500 ml bottle from The Party Source. Pours a cloudy orangish gold with a finger of eggshell white head that settles into a small uneven film, ring, and some lace. Orange and citrus peel, florals, pine resin, caramel, sweet bread and sugars, and tea. Medium-bodied, with medium carbonation and a bitter, malty, sweet, resinous mouthfeel. Really nice fresh aroma and then a satisfying, balanced mouthfeel and flavor. Impressive. Not quite as big and poppy as the Surly version, but very, very good in its own right.

Todd. I’ve heard a lot about Todd, and yet nothing at all. That always gives you a really good foundation for a review of it, as everyone is talking about it, but no one is actually saying anything. So, I grab my handy guitar bottle opener and using the appropriate opener, I relieve the pressure and Todd comes on hard. The lift releases an oddly nutty, but heavily spruce-infused aroma laced with bright, floral accents. I pour the brew into my equally appropriate glassware, watching as it fills my glass with a hazy, bright amber liquid. The foam rises about a finger above the surface and although reflects the color, it is so many shades lighter. Soapy and porous, it thins to a rocky blanket, allowing the aroma to soar through. - As I pull the brew deep, I taste, and savor the aroma, the bitterness becoming apparent on my lips. Todd traces the edges of my tongue, biting the tip and nibbling the edges of it as I draw it in; I swallow slowly and feel the brew slip easily down my throat. I feel no dryness there, as with most bitter IPAs, but a soothing feeling on the back of my tongue. Todd is seemingly apologetic for the abuse on the forward by easing up on the back end. - The finish is long, as is normal with the style, but consistent in flavor and aroma, no matter the level in the bottle or the temperature. A comfortable carbonation even to the last drop in the glass, the blanket of foam still coats the surface to my last swallow and leaves a wet, heavy bit of head in the bottom of the glass. Tasty as hell. I really, really enjoyed this beer. I’d be happy to spend a lot of crazy nights with Todd.

500ml bomber from ck1, thanks bro! Pours a paler orange with an off-white head leaving some spongey lacing. Nose is strongly citrus, heavily pineapple, with pine. Taste is of sweet fruits, oranges, pineapple, tangy pine and a light malt backbone. Heavily hop-forward. Medium bodied with a touch of alcohol. Finishes heavily to the bitter side of bittersweet. A very nice one! Pleased to see these two brewers together. 15.3

A hazy yellow beer with a white head. The aroma has notes of lemon, straw, hops, petroleum, and malt. The flavor is sweet with notes of lemon, petroleum, hay, and malt, leading to a bitter finish.

Tap at Scheras for Zwanze day. Strong hop aroma as expected. Taste follow with bitter finish. Pretty good.

Tap at Schera’s. Slightly hazy orange golden pour with a big white head. Citrus and caramel malt. Nose is awesome. Tastes like it has some age on it. Not as good as the Surly version, but I get that fresh/local, so that’s not really a fair comparison.

500mL bottle from Slowbeer. BB 03/2016 Pours pale gold with a bit of haze. Dense white head persists. Pungent nose of hops - grass, unripe melon, passionfruit, citrus peel, dried leafy herbs, white pepper, with a toasty malt presence. Smooth body, seems bigger than it is, slightly slick & resiny, moderate carbonation. Bit more malt on the palate; lovely toasty, grainy, pale caramel notes, overshadowed by aggressive hop notes of citrus rind, green melon, guava, resiny leafy herbs/sap/something, dried herbs too. Plenty of lingering bitterness to finish. Damn fine stuff. Would love to try a real Surly beer in the future!

S-the mosaic hopps gives this a citrus nose that is simply beautiful. A-Golden Georgia peaches in the sun. T-like a power ballad in my mouth, this beer started out with sweet citra hopps followed by a orangey grapefruit finish. This brew is one of the best examples of a highish abv beer that really hides it rocking power. P-very smooth O-my favorite surly... next to darkness of course. ABV is actually 7.2%
