COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION

English: The sunstone - much disputed among scholars. Did the Viking navigators really have such a tool that would help them point out what was east and what was west - even on a less than sunny day? We certainly believe so. Many years later no sunstone was needed when Amager Bryghus was invaded by what very much looked like Viking ancestors of American descent. Hailing from Munster, Indiana, Chris Boggess and Barnaby Struve of Three Floyds Brewing arrived not with a vengeance but with very loud King Diamond on their portable mp3 player. This was not a day for slaughter but for brewing. And brew we did. The mellow and dangerously quaffable Arctic SunStone is proof that even Viking warriors can have a more subtle side to them. All hail to Three Floyds.

Ingredients: Water. Malts: Pale, Munich, Melanoidin. Hops: Tomahawk, Citra, Centennial, Simcoe. Yeast: UK-ale.

Fresh bottle. Aroma of orange, mandarin, bread, pine, rye? Pours out a murky almost brown colour with an off white head. Not great looking. Taste is softly bitter and medium sweet with notes of mandarin, bread, pine. Not that bitter for a Amager brew. Medium body, very easy drinking, soft carbonation, fruity and mildly bitter finish. If you expect the usual more intense bitterness you’ll be dissapointed. This is all about hop flavours, not bitterness.

Solid enough, although by no means the the best from Amager. Fairly mellow hops, little carbonation.

Bottle from Prohibition WInes. Pours a hazy golden amber with a foaming white head. Aroma of malt and yeast. The taste has tropical fruit - lime, orange and grapefruit along with lots of pibe resin. Very tasty but a little strong for this style of beer. Dry and bitter finish and a very mouthfilling palate.

APA by Amager in collaboration with Three Floyds. Very thick and frothy (hops-enhanced), thickly membranous lacing, irregular, off-white head over a lightly hazy, deep warm orange coloured beer turning into a misty amber with sediment added. Lovely and lively aroma of mandarins, fresh orange peel, lychee, pink grapefruit, biscuit, bell pepper, sweet paprika, marmelade, unripe mango, cantaloupe, vanilla sugar, lightly toasted bread, redcurrant, subtle hints of dry earth, wormwood, pine, tonic water and barbecued chicken. Crisp onset, lots of citrus freshness (mandarin) with sweetish (mango, pineapple) and sourish (gooseberry, starfruit) components well balanced against each other and remaining sufficiently ’clean’, spritzy and initially slightly numbing, minerally carbonation, supple caramelly and biscuity malt body, sweetish but not (too) sweet, very lightly toasted to support a growing hop character, spicy, citrusy and floral, but remaining primarily aromatic as it should be in an APA; the bitterness as such is long-stretched and cleverly dosed, but gentle and mellow, so that juicy maltiness and the initial fruitiness remain equally important. Clean, very aromatic, utterly elegant, completely flawless, light and smooth and extremely quenching, this is an exemplary APA by all standards, the high quality standard of both breweries is undeniable here. The only thing that is out of line here, is the name, because this is a sunny beer in more than one respect rather than ’arctic’... Glad I bought this.

This beer did very little for me. A lot of exotic fruits and citrus, but I think this is a pale APA (pun intended).
