4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 iwantalambic (1478) - St. Louis, USA - APR 24, 2011
Draft pint at The Stable in STL: clear yellow gold with an ivory, medium bubbled head. Wonderful biscuity aroma that mixes nicely with farmhouse pale malts and subtle, hop undertones. Crisp palate that mixes nicely with the creaminess of the malts. I wish I could better describe what happens when you add rye to beer...the result is consistent in my mind: it enhances it: rye ipas, and now rye saison...I dig it! Please, let’s try rye in a few more styles! Nice work, Amalgamated folks!
4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 seymour (782) - Saint Louis, Missouri, USA - OCT 17, 2011
Tasted on tap at The Stable brewpub. Hazy amber-orange color with full off-white head, some retention and lace. Lively, caramel, hops and yeast estery aromas. Flavors of malt-sweetness, earthy hops bitterness, bread, toast, pepper and clove. Nice sharp, spicy mouthfeel from the rye and relatively dry finish, perhaps from a little roasted barley, unfermentable grain, and/or highly attenuative yeast. Absolutely delicious. My brother-in-law and I ate here for lunch after our Anheuser-Busch Brewmaster Tour, and the differences were striking. Tastings at one of the largest breweries in the world followed by tastings at one of the smallest breweries in the world. Amalgamated makes VASTLY beer beer.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 phaleslu (3530) - Saint Louis, Missouri, USA - APR 6, 2011
Draft served in an imperial pint glass at The Stable. Pours a cloudy, pale yellow-gold color with a small white head. Aroma of banana, clove, funk, bready malts, pepper, and lemon citrus. Flavor of banana, bready yeast, clove, funk, wheat, lemon citrus, and floral hops. Not really much rye in the aroma or flavor, but there is some spiciness that might be from it. Light-medium bodied, with medium carbonation and a spicy, astringent mouthfeel. Interesting saison, and a good sipper.
