4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 seymour (782) - Saint Louis, Missouri, USA - OCT 5, 2011
Tasted on tap at The Stable in standard pint glass. Cloudy, deep golden color with medium white head which dissipated quickly. Lots of noble hop and active yeast aromas. Medium body with sparkling carbonation. Tastes of grain, rising dough, citrus zest, pepper. Crisp and refreshing. It’s an interesting experience: drinking a turbulent, yeasty beer which is nonetheless a fairly neutral lager. Hefeweizen is the only other mainstream unfiltered style, with all its attendant fruitier/spicier ale yeast esters. Amalgamated Zoigl is a masterfully crafted beer. Like the real deal in Germany, it’s somewhat hard to find, but well worth seeking out.

Sample at beerfest in Augusta. Poured a hazy orange color with a nice white head. Aroama was very bready, malts and citrus. Flavor was one of a kiund. Crisp, citrus, earthy. Very good. Longer finish. Brew master said they are one of two brewers in Missouri that brew a zoigl. This one was amazing.

Draft at The Stable. I’ve only recently learned what a zoigl was and I really like the concept. Pours a hazy orange color with little head or visible carbonation. Aroma of bready malts, toffee, citrusy hops, fresh oranges, and grains. Flavor is very malty, with orange citrus, toffee, pine resin, and some pepper, especially late. Medium-bodied, with a malty mouthfeel and sharp carbonation. Peppery finish. Very cool beer.

From Schlafly’s Fresh Hop Fest - Pours lightly hazy amber / golden with a small white head. The aroma is very bready and grainy with some orange and citrus hops. Medium / light body with lots of sharp stinging carbonation. The flavor starts off with piny, citrusy and spicy hops with very light malt presence. With all the hops it hard to pinpoint the malt, but it seems quite grainy. The finish is spicy and citrusy. Very nice, one of my faves at the fest.

Draft at the Stable and listed as 4.4% abv. If only more beers were. Bright orange-amber. Nutty, malty nose with notes of pumpkin. Enticing. lightly sweet with a nice crisp bitterness. Oh my, I could drink a lot of this.

Sampled on draught during Great Taste of Midwest 2009 in Madison Wisconsin. Pours a semi-hazy golden yellow colored brew with an aver sized white head that quickly dissipates to a thin white ring. Aroma of golden grain malt, dark pitted fruits, some floral hops and a touch of honey. Taste is medium bodied, very light in carbonation with a fruity golden grain malt with some sweet bread dough and a hint of yeast. Finish is semi-sweet with some fruit and golden grain aftertaste. So far, the best one from Amalgamated I’ve tried.

(draught - Fresh Hop Ale Festival at Schlafly Bottleworks) slightly hazy with nice head.Yeasty aroma. Bready malt with a subtle hops finish. Should probably have been the first beer I tried at the festival before I smacked my palate with all the hops.

Sampler at the brew pub. It poured an orange coloring with a thin off-white head that lasted for a very long time. It had a toasted malt aroma and flavor. Not a bad brew.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Strykzone (3132) - Wood River, Illinois, USA - OCT 10, 2009
On tap at The Stable. My first Zoigl and I didn’t know what to expect. An delightful and interesting beer. It was a dirty looking gold. Aroma was yeast, apple, and fruit. Kind of funky. Flavor was almost a saison but not quite. It offered yeast, complex fruit, and funk. Pleasant and, again, interesting. Each sip began thin but then became smooth and creamy. A very enjoyable beer.
