Brewed by Amarcord Brewery in the small medieval town of Apecchio, Italy, AMA Bruna is a beer made specifically for the Italian dinner table. Designed by Brooklyn Brewmaster Garrett Oliver, Ama Bruna is refermented in the bottle with brown candy sugar(7,5% ABV). Complex, but soft on the palate, the malt flavors are pronounced but subtle, with flavors of toffee, a touch of chocolate, pear and cinnamon as a result of the caramelized sugar.

Pours a very dark copper that shows highlights when held up to the light. Very active head that disappears quickly and but doesn’t leave any lacing. Aroma is cherries, yeast and sugar. Taste was not as intense as the aroma which was a little disappointing. The carbonation threw me off at the first sip. Not sure what to make of it. Very dry finish. Interesting beer. Might have to revisit it to get a better grasp if it.

May. ’16. A 0.355 l bottle. It poured a hazy brown body with a small head. Weak yeast aroma, touched with pleasant caramel and banana combo. Flavor was lightly sweet, caramel and other finely toasted malt spiced with coriander and cinnamon. Lightly tingling on palate pronouncing the coffee and cocoa notes. Very smooth. Finish was shorter, a bit watery with aforementioned notes now dominating. A bit warming alcoholic and lightly more yeasty here, too. Medium bodied, could be fuller, but okay, a fine Belgian strong anyway. Not really a dubbel, which is probably a good thing.

Dried fruits and caramel but not so intense, dark ruby, medium body, medium carbonation, watery, taste of caramel and fruits...not bad, obviously can be refined.

Bottle, 75cl. Sparkling dark ruby with a frothy tan head. Aromas of dried fruits, brown sugar, apples, caramel. Medium bodied, fizzy carbonation. Thick and oily, slightly dry. Medium sweet, medium to low bitter. Earthy fruit and malty flavors into a sourish fruity finish.

Bottle, 750ml. A dark reddish beer with a small brown head. Aromas of dried fruits, red apples, alcohol and some caramel. Taste is moderately bitter with medium sweetness. Medium bodied with some carbonation and almost no astringency. Feels kind of watery at the end, with a somewhat alcoholic finish, although it has some dried fruits as well.

Spritzig dunkel hefiger Antrunk. Süßlich würzig, geringe Herbe. Konstante passende Würzigkeit, spritzig, zum Ende etwas trocken werdend. Typisch belgische Hefigkeit. 10/11/11/11//11

Bottle from Veeno, Bristol. Appearance: medium head which dissapears quickly, dark amber/red colour, lightly hazy. Aroma: malts, grain, also very little of plums and wood. Taste: lightly bitter with strong sweet aftertaste. Palate: full body, average carbonation, medium finish. Quite good, deep, rich taste. I like it.

750ml bottle. Unfiltered orange-brown body. Foamy off-white head. Kind of a buttery chestnut aroma. Nice body, effervescence. Medium bodied, easy drinking. Very mellow malty tones. Classic Italian chestnut, dark fruit, brown caramel, chocolate.

Last bottle saved from Seiyu. L: pours a brown with reddish highlights, a fizzy cola-esque head that disappears. S: plenty of brown sugar, malt, and some dark fruit like currants or dates in the aroma. L: mild flavours in line with the nose, only slightly boozy. F: mouthfeel is a bit light and spritzy and over quite quickly, it falls away a bit towards the end. Warms the throat ok. O: this had a decent dubbel nose going for it, but not quite flavourful or lasting enough to match the classics. Worth a try.
