Brewed by Amarcord Brewery in the small medieval town of Apecchio, Italy, AMA Bruna is a beer made specifically for the Italian dinner table. Designed by Brooklyn Brewmaster Garrett Oliver, Ama Bruna is refermented in the bottle with brown candy sugar(7,5% ABV). Complex, but soft on the palate, the malt flavors are pronounced but subtle, with flavors of toffee, a touch of chocolate, pear and cinnamon as a result of the caramelized sugar.

Pours a very dark copper that shows highlights when held up to the light. Very active head that disappears quickly and but doesn’t leave any lacing. Aroma is cherries, yeast and sugar. Taste was not as intense as the aroma which was a little disappointing. The carbonation threw me off at the first sip. Not sure what to make of it. Very dry finish. Interesting beer. Might have to revisit it to get a better grasp if it.

355ml long neck bottle bought at YATA in New Town Plaza, Shatin.

Looks: Clear copper brown colour with very thin trace of yeast particles; Half finger head and off-white foam which lasts for 1 minute; Very good sticky lacing with very slight carbonation.

Aroma: Fragrant and sweet malt, with strong banana, dark fruits, strong caramel, vanilla, strong bubble gum, light chocolate, sugar, bread, strong Bel yeast and very light grass.

Taste: Mid to light sweet malt, with caramel, light toffee, light dark fruits, light floral, candi sugar, biscuits, strong Bel yeast, fair lemon and light bitter grassy hops.

Body: Medium body. Thin and slick palate.

Mouth Feel: Fairly good maltyness in thin background, Basic caramel and light toffee with light dark fruits, light floral and hints of chocolate. Candi sugar sweetness is fair as most of it thin out the beer. Fairly yeasty with touch of lemon to round. Pretty good!

Hoppiness: Very light grass in nose. Light floral, light lemon and light grass in taste; Bitterness is light for an abrupt, very low astringent sweet malty finish.

After Taste: Fairly dry. Fairly Sweet and easy to mouth.

Comments: This one tastes somewhere between a Dubbel and a Brune. It’s competent but all the main characters seems to be missing quite a bit - body is too slim, lack of dark malty roast and chocolates and silkyness. Only the Bel yeast and nice fruity aroma being the bright spots here. It’s neat, but can be a lot better.

Very nice botte design made me grab this one. The refermentation after taste is apparent and sugary, soft on the palate the malt is clear and tastes clean. Some chocoate tast I noticed also somewhere far far away.

Bevuta in bottiglia.

May. ’16. A 0.355 l bottle. It poured a hazy brown body with a small head. Weak yeast aroma, touched with pleasant caramel and banana combo. Flavor was lightly sweet, caramel and other finely toasted malt spiced with coriander and cinnamon. Lightly tingling on palate pronouncing the coffee and cocoa notes. Very smooth. Finish was shorter, a bit watery with aforementioned notes now dominating. A bit warming alcoholic and lightly more yeasty here, too. Medium bodied, could be fuller, but okay, a fine Belgian strong anyway. Not really a dubbel, which is probably a good thing.

Dried fruits and caramel but not so intense, dark ruby, medium body, medium carbonation, watery, taste of caramel and fruits...not bad, obviously can be refined.

Bottle, 75cl. Sparkling dark ruby with a frothy tan head. Aromas of dried fruits, brown sugar, apples, caramel. Medium bodied, fizzy carbonation. Thick and oily, slightly dry. Medium sweet, medium to low bitter. Earthy fruit and malty flavors into a sourish fruity finish.
