2.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 Marko (3110) - Split, - DEC 23, 2004
I expected the most from this one so I left it for the end, after all, it says here that it’s a Belgian strong ale. Damn I was wrong. This turned into a big dissapointment. Says "Ambrata doppio malto" on the label and looks that way. Murky very dark amber, maybe brown even. Very small thick head. Not much carbonation. Pleasant toffeish nose. Now to the taste..... well, it certainly is filling and..... hearty.... but not really pleasant. There’s a malt liquory feel that ruins it. It has an ok toffeeish taste, but doesn’t hide the alcohol well at all. 10% was probably far too much. Tastes really like La Puténa with the alcohol cranked up too much. It’s probably pretty fine in the cold winter nights, but I couldn’t picture myself drinking this in any other season. Actually, I couldn’t picture myself drinking this ever again. Maybe someday.... This has the usual Amarcord bottle (nice looking, with a resealable cork), and the lady on this ones label is perhaps the least revealing of all. Not an inspiring review.... but there’s not much to say.

Sampled from bottle at Brewery Creek, pours a clear amber with a small white head. Simple aroma of syrup and caramel malts - hints at being cloyingly sweet. Flavour is sickly sweet with caramel malts, syrup and slight Belgian yeast notes. Simple, cloyingly sweet and unrefined. Not good.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 BBB63 (5022) - La Porte, Indiana, USA - FEB 3, 2012
Flip top bottle and served in my NB Worthy glass: Slightly hazy russet amber with a small but lasting head which left only spotty lace upon the glass. The aroma has notes of crystal and toasted malts, plenty of pils malt, butterscotch, candied apple and fruit cake, with some olde school barley wine oxidation which is a good thing. The taste is shockingly smooth and approachable, with sweet fruits and sweet malts the main focus here. This is called a Belgian Strong but I see much more in common with an English Strong Ale IMO. Lush complex layers of malt with a palate grabbing alcohol content. The bitterness comes about for a brief moment to help move the train along, nice herbal components. The mouth feel is lush yet not sticky, warming but not in your face. In a world of over priced Italian brews this one actually seemed worth the price. I would buy this again which is high praise for an Italian beer.
