Bottle. Pours a pitch black with tanned head. Aromas of roasted chocolate, malts and molasses. Taste is heavy on the chewy maltiness and caramel with some chocolate. Really chewy! Better than I expected.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
500ml bottle from WB. Clear, deep brown pour with red highlights and a persistent beige head leaving moderate lace. Nose is heavy on the molasses. Medium-light body and moderate carbonation. Sucrose, molasses and a touch of licorice, not much else. Finish is short and sweet, with a touch of roast malt creeping in. ABV is nicely concealed, but unfortunately it’s by sugar. Heaps of better Baltic Porters out there, have a look at Smuttynose’s offering (Americans) or Zywiec’s (Europe). Keep an eye out for more BPs from west coast breweries like American and Berryessa, this is a rising style. I’ve had samples from both of the latter and they’re quite good.

2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
500ml bottle. Pours an opaque black, with a medium-sized beige head, which fades rapidly and leaves no lacing. The aroma has some dark chocolate, but also cold coffee grounds and a slightly musty smell; on the whole it is not great. A flash of bitter cocoa up front is soon overcome, weirdly, by banana. This is followed by cold coffee in the mid-palate leading into a very overtly alcoholic finish. This is not a great beer. Both the aroma and flavour have some unpleasant and jarring notes, and it tastes every bit of 8% ABV, so it feels both unbalanced and unsubtle.

2.4 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Black colour with a big tan bubbly head that leaves a fine lacing. Rich wort aroma. Medium body with a balcanced sweetness and a light bitterness. Really unusual baltic porter. I have to close my nose when I drink this. The wort aroma destroyes this beer. Lots of caramel malt in the flavour with light fruity notes and some wort.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
UPDATED: AUG 23, 2013 I have no problem with the label statement about this being the quintessential flavour of black beer. Wow, what a ride! The beer is dark brown, black as a shoe on the glass, with a light tan head - a persistent one - breathing nice aromas of plums, dates, roasted malts and Lebkuchen. Certainly there’s a peaty smokiness that it’s more evident on the woody taste, among a fabulous complexity of chocolates, brown sugars, Lübeck treats, dried fruits, treacle, cross-buns, sweet soy sauce and a nice vegemite bitterness, never any offensive, but which balances perfectly any overwhelming pain from the range of sweet challenges to the tastebuds. The beer is full bodied, slick and oily, post soviet sexy, insinuating, incorporating the Balticness in all its character, as a good Polish porter should. I could bathe in it and get turned on, no shame about it.
