4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Grand Imperial Porter
Pours deep brown with a slight reddish tinge. Thick creamy tan head with medium retention and light lacing. Rich aroma of raisins, brown sugar and sweet malt. Dark chocolate undertones. Really flippin’ good smell. Flavor is a slightly subdued version of the aroma, but well balanced, with chocolate covered espresso beans as the best definer. Sweet malt, and a mild hop character round out the finish. Nice beer and will buy again.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
0.5 l bottle from bestillingsutvalget, Vinmonopolet. Dense, foamy two-finger light choco head. Translucent, the darkest ruby body. Inviting aroma of plum marmelade, port, dark bread and burnt caramel. Taste has a deep and refined sweetness; toasted dark malts, tinned dark fruits, and molasses. Tones of pepper, and a touch of fruity acidity and alcohol. Very mildly hopped. Palate-coating and creamy in the mouth. Full body. Sourish-sweet dark malts and juicy dark fruits in the finish. A very good one.

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Had a bottle of this last night. Colour... garnet-brown with a thick head. Nose... funky and rather musty! Palate... smooth, creamy, more like a bock than what I think of when I think of a porter! Caramel, butter toffee, sweetly malty, nice stuff but not an imperial porter!

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 14/20
Nothing extraordinary here, not strongly flavored, not complex, but very silky smooth and calmly pleasing drinking. A mild-mannered Epicurean session beer.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle. This is the second Polish beer I’ve rated, and one of the few I’ve ever drunk before. As such, this is pretty exotic! :-) It pours a near-black body with a reddish hue, covered by a quickly dissipating light caramel head. The nose gives me manure (first time ever, but in a pleasant way), roasted malts and hints of peanut and cocoa butter. And something else, something I haven’t had in a long time now...what is it...damn, I know this...help me out here, brain - think, think... Ah! I got it! Miso! It smells of the Japanese fermented soy paste "miso"! Amazing. How did they do that? This is like a discovery journey into another beer continent. And then, the first sip: mmmm...salty licorice, sweet dark malts and a mild hint of soil. Some miso in there, as well. This is the most interesting beer I’ve had in a while. Rather drinkable too, not much booze coming out of the 8 % ABV and the palate is light and simple. What a pleasant surprise, this is one highly recommended brew; particularly if you are a fan of Baltic Porters. Big ups to Poland, which I will be on the lookout for in the future.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle. It pours a clear, dark brown body with a reddish hue. It has a finger-thick beige head that leaves lacings. The aroma has a touch of diacetyl, with a good dash of coffee and dark chocolate. Slightly nutty, with hints of dried fruits, quite roasted. In the far back, a whiff of dms hides, but overall, a really pleasant aroma. It’s full-bodied, smooth and creamy in the mouth, with an appropriated level of carbonation. Some hoppy bitterness lingers, slowly wiping away the initial flavors of roasted malts, dried fruit, some nuts and chocolate. The alcohol is fairly detectable, that’s probably good, even though I like some to be found in the stronger beers. The low levels makes it a dangerously drinkable beer though, but maybe a bit on the sweet side. Overall; definately a beer to drink more of. 100305

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
500 ml bottle as Amber Esencja Czarnego Piwa. Dark brown body with a fine tan head. Aroma is roasted malt, chocolate and dry fruit. Flavor is sweet malty, mild roasted, chocolate and fruity with low bitterness. Quite nice and actually somehow balanced, even this sweet and not much bitter. The chocolate sweetness balances the roasted malt and plays along with the dry fruit like a nice dessert. Nothing extraordinary but a pleasant, sweet Baltic porter.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
0,5 l bottle from Vinmonopolet. Pours dark amber with a small brown head. Strong roasty aroma with liquorice and chocolate notes. Medium sweet taste, with nice dark liquorice, toffee and chocolate notes. Full bodied. Mild mouthfeel. Sweet chocolate/toffee aftertaste. Well hidden alcohol, but some can be senced towards the end. A little bit on the sweet side, although good, more hops would made this excellent.
