COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Cask; Regular. Also available bottle conditioned.
Our much-lauded ’Original’ is a self-styled traditional stout. Made with a complex blend of five malts to give a full-flavoured, yet smooth and easy drinking base and bittered with a blend of Saaz, Fuggle and Styrian Goldings for a subtle hop aroma.

(Cask at Euston Tap, Euston, London, 19 May 2011) Black colour with brief, beige head. Malty, roasted nose with notes of chocolate, cocoa and dark bread. Roasted, malty taste with chocolate, cocoa, tobacco and a gentle cocoa bitterness in the finish. Rather light body, dry. Exceptionally well balanced, and the low abv makes it highly drinkable. Very nice one.

Cask@Euston Tap, London. More or less black colour with a small beigeish brown head, that settles quite quickly. Aroma is chocolate, some nutty notes, mild roasted malts as well as some slight liquorice and also mild floral and wooden notes. Flavour is chocolate, roasted malts, some toffee, nutty notes as well as some bitter hoppyness lurking in the background. Pleasantly balanced.

The Smithfield, Manchester. Cappuccino head on pitch. Roasty espresso, singed barley aroma with a hint of vanilla. Smoke building in the mouth with more black coffee, bramble and soot. Solid dry burnt to a crisp finish. Body a bit flimsy and low condition, but creamy with it. Some true stoutiness here, Joy Division on the jukebox. 14 easy.

A Mes rate: Gravicask @ Reading Beer Festival. Black with a slight tan head. Red wine and some nice oaky and smokey notes. Some fruity character also. Just seems to be lacking some balls. Slightly chalky in the finish. Good but could be better.
