2.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 8/20 TheHulk (484) - Lethbridge, - FEB 11, 2011
Pretty good chocolate aroma that mixes nicely with the malts. Decent head but it fades quickly, too carbony. Flavour falls short of the nose but for some reason all I can think is that this beer really needs pepper. Its not there though, and the % starts to show. Only got this to rate...
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 reebtogi (2159) - Edmonton, Alberta, CANADA - AUG 21, 2011
341mL bottle poured almost black with thin tan head and little lacing. Aroma is chocolate and light roasted malt. Taste is sweet chocolate and bitterness of roasted malts and some light hops. Body is a little thin for a stout and carbonation is moderate. Overall, a decent stout, but could be better with some more body and additional hops.
2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 Powertrip (841) - Calgary, Alberta, CANADA - APR 25, 2011
Single bottle purchased from Zyn Liqour in Calgary, AB on 04/15/2011. Colour: As expected, dark to black with medium shaded head that quite quickly evaporated. Nose: Moss, honey ham, burnt oates, shoe polish. The chocolate is not evident...not sure if actual cocoa was used? Taste: Medium-light sweet, medium sour, light bitter. Strong tang but missing the real powerful crisp roasted malt & coffee that make a solid stout. Traces of cocoa, but again - where is the big chocolate that one would assume shoud be around considering the name? This mouth feel too.
2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 gramity (601) - Edmonton, Alberta, CANADA - MAR 23, 2011
Pours quite dark, in the glass it appears near black. A firm pour generated a thin beige head that left behind only a slim ring after fading fast.
Dark malts , creamy coffee and toast hit the nose. I can’t find much chocolate in the aroma until this one warms, then the impression of dark chocolate pops up.
Flavour is more of a dry stout profile, chocolate doesn’t start showing until the stout is about cellar temperature. Dry, roasted malt type flavour, leaning more to the bitter and astringent end of the spectrum. Finish is a little unpleasant, almost medicinal.
A bit of fullness to the mouthfeel is nice, but the carbonation is a tad prickly.
2.4 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 8/20 Labelnoir (9) - Edmonton, Alberta, CANADA - MAR 8, 2011 does not count
A nice dark pour, thick but short lasting head,
smooth feel, dark cedar and burnt toast note.
As far as a small brew local stout goes, not too shabby,.
2.8 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20 Cole (919) - , Alberta, CANADA - FEB 12, 2011
Pours black with a thin beige head. Mild chocolate aroma. Flavour is slightly bitter with a very burnt coffee some chocolate but it’s pretty bland. Not a bad brew but its not great.
2.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20 Scubaguy (230) - Alberta, CANADA - FEB 3, 2011
It pours a black color with a short lived tan head and some small lacing.
On the nose I am getting a strong chocolate aroma and a slight burnt coffee.
The flavor has a bunch of things going on. I am getting some roasted malt, burnt coffee, baker’s chocolate and sour notes. It does have a watery feel to it, There is too many things here with nothing being tied together.
It finishes with a strong sour bite. I am not sure if this was a bad batch or not. I have heard some rumor’s that some stale product to make it to the store’s. But something that could be a great beer is mediocre at best.
3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20 DuffMan (4418) - the land of bitumen, beef & beer, Alberta, CANADA - JUL 15, 2010
Bottle. Pours a dark chestnut brown with a quickly vanishing tan head. Very chocolatey aroma, some light ash. Thin palate, sweet chocolate dominates the flavour, but unfortunately the mouthfeel is bordering on watery. Low bitterness. I think this should fall under the ’sweet stout’category.
4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20 Captainsask (5) - CANADA - MAR 7, 2010 does not count
Mmmm Chocolatey. Delicious chocolate flavour that really jumps out at you. Always have been impressed by Amber’s Brewing. Thick and foamy when poured from the bottle, tasty and flavorful. Definitely one to try if looking for a good chocolate Stout.
2.1 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 5/20 Boodleton (4) - USA - JAN 3, 2010 does not count
Not sure whether the batch I got was a bit stale or perhaps had been mishandled, but this beer was a let-down. Aroma was strong and sweet when I first opened the bottle, pouring it into the glass produced no head whatsoever with a bit of lacing around the sides, and the mouth feel tended toward being sour.
The good parts were that it definitely had a very chocolatey taste to start and finished nicely. Hoping this was just a bad batch, as I like supporting the local guys.
