Oakes (6771), Miami Beach, Florida, USA Jun 14, 2008 Very dark brown with no head. The aroma is a bit light but contains chocolate and vanilla. It leads with quite a bit of heat, some fudgey character, lots of vanilla and then finishes hot again. Assertive, but not in a stupid way. argo0 (6004), Washington DC, USA May 9, 2008 (12oz bottle, thanks artusory) Brown-black body topped by minimal brown head. Aroma is moderately sweet, Bourbon/vanilla, some chocolate. Taste is moderately sweet, Bourbon, chocolate, light roast. Sticky full body, low carbonation. hopscotch (4355), Vero Beach, Florida, USA Oct 13, 2006 Updated: May 25, 2008Re-rate... Bottle... MBSBF’08 ... This beer rocks!... Black ale with a small, creamy, light brown head. Chocolate, vanilla bean and a touch of smoke are the highlights of the aroma. The only lowlight is a phenolic, bandage note. Full-bodied and silky with medium carbonation. Sweet with big time bourbon, chocolate and vanilla. Bourbon-hot, chocolaty, sweet finish. Enjoyed this world class concoction much more this time around! ***Original rating*** Draft... GABF ’06... Extremely dark, opaque ale with a small, creamy, well-tanned head. Chocolate, black cherries and wood in the nose. Sweet, tart flavor full of black cherries and chocolate. Full-bodied with a velvety mouthfeel and soft carbonation. Finishes fruity, chocolaty and dry. Cornfield (4245), Oak Lawn, Illinois, USA Oct 5, 2005 Very nice. It pours a deep black with a sustained creamy brown head that laces the glass nicely. The aroma is a smooth blending of roasted barley, bittersweet chocolate, and bourbon. Very creamy in the mouth, the bourbon retreats at the beginning, the roasted barley, sweet malts, chocolate, and vanilla taking over. The bourbon comes forward in the end giving a finish like you’d just sipped a good sour mash. Nice indeed. <font size=-4> America’s Brewpub, Aurora, IL<font size=-1> Ernest (4169), Boulder, Colorado, USA Apr 15, 2006 GABF 2005.
Body is dark brown to black.
Aroma is moderately malty (roasted grain), lightly hoppy (resin), with notes of vanilla, whiskey, and wood.
Flavor is heavily sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter.
Finish is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, moderately bitter.
Full body, velvety texture, lively carbonation, moderately alcoholic.
The aroma didn’t reel me in, but it was certainly not bad considering my distaste for bourbon. Seemed a little simple in the malt department, but the bourbony nose may have covered up subtleties. Not bad, nice mouthfeel, but I was not enamored.
