3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 hopscotch (7522) - Vero Beach, USA - JUL 8, 2008
Draft… DLD’08… Pours pitch black with a small, fizzy, light brown head. Notes of chocolate and espresso with a hint of diacetyl are released from the diminishing head. Full-bodied and oily with modest carbonation. Sweet and chocolaty up front; burnt and bitter on the backside. Bitter-sweet, acrid finish.

Big thanks to Scott Reid from Chuck’s! pours brownish black, tan head. nose of bitter cooking chocolate, malted milk, kind of like a whopper candy. solid bitter hops, roasted malts, molasses, maybe a mochachino? light, fluffy mouthfeel. nice and smooth. bring this one back.

Cask at Rattle N Hum 2009. I told the beer master to surprise me with a stout and this is what he brought me. Hats off to him. Not quite cold, it poured black with no head and minimal carbonation. But it smelled and tasted like chocolate. Will have to get it again to better describe the glory that was this beer.

Cask at Blind Tiger. Poured a typical stout black, with no head. Aroma of oak, and some light hops. Flavor was robust and delicious, with coffee, and chocolate notes, with strong malt flavor. Thin? Maybe, but by no means is this lacking any flavor, very impressive beer,

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 Headbanger (2130) - Aurora, Illinois, USA - JUL 7, 2008
Draft At Brewery(4/25/08)-A pitch black body with a small ring for a head. Has an aroma of coffee. Taste of chocolate and coffee on this medium bodied brew. I felt this to be a little weak for an Imperial Stout.

My sample looked and smelled great...black pour with a huge robust head emitting a rich roasty aroma. But the first sip revealed a very, very distinct lactic(?) sourness that just should not be there. I’ll rerate on another batch.
4.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20 JMerritt (1590) - Macomb, Illinois, USA - MAR 1, 2008
On tap in January 2008 @ my cousin’s wedding reception being held at Walter Payton’s Roundhouse. (This offering was named "Storm Trooper Imperial Stout" on the menu.) Jet black with no head. No light shines through when held up to the light. Aroma of oak, some slight vanilla, light roast, and bittersweet cocoa. Woody flavor, very smooth, oakiness is again prevalent. Semi-bitter hoppiness and fresh coffee middle, earthy, almost minty finish. Wonderful.

Draught at the brewpub. Appeared opaque that quickly was wispy and clung to the glasses edge. Malty with a ton of dry roast in the aroma. Quite malty with strong roast character, dry, the coffee aspects come off a bit stale to me. Finish is quite dry with a lingering burnt toast finish.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 Cornfield (5277) - Oak Forest, Illinois, USA - FEB 10, 2008
I had this to finish off my Sunday morning brunch at the brewpub. Served in a snifter, its body appears black capped with a dense tan head that vanished rather early in the game. It had an aroma of roasted barley, darkly sweet malts, licorice, and a hint of milk chocolate. Smooth to drink, the flavor had the addition of coffee and alcohol, blended nicely with tastes suggested by the nose. The finish is mildly bitter with a touch of alcohol. Very nice for the single digit temperatures and sturdy winds that we’re now experiencing.
