4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 grant (842) - Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA - JAN 5, 2012Ruby brown color with light tan head. Wonderful roasty aroma with light sweetness and little wisps of smoke. Sweetish initial taste, but not too sweet, complemented by a round and nuanced nutty maltiness. Some light hits of smoke as well. thick, round finish with some warning alcohol and today graininess. Really a unique scotch ale, but I dig it.
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 IainOg (75) - Virginia, USA - MAY 6, 2010
dark with some garnet highlights. good head, and nice lacing. sweet and roasty aroma with very little hop presence. thick body nicely balanced with alcohol warming. prominent caramel flavors with toffee, roast, and hints of dried fruits, tobacco, and chocolate. very sweet, definitely too sweet for some. this one would be even better with a little age.
3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Beaver (1057) - Fort Collins, Colorado, USA - FEB 24, 2010
22 oz bottle. Pours brown with a smallish off-white head that quickly goes to a thin collar that leaves a little lacing.
The aroma is chocolate and caramel malts, sweet molasses, nuts, leather and some smoky peat.
The flavor is lots of sweet sugary molasses with chocolate nutty maltiness. It has a smoky bitter finish with some alcohol. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with low carbonation but still fairly creamy.
Overall, a nice beer. I like the way the sweetness plays with the smokiness. It’s still a bit too sweet for my taste.

22 oz bottle as a bonus from BeerandBlues2 in a trade. Pours a dark brown with no head. Nose of sweet malt, sugar, nuts, and caramel. Flavor is sticky and heavy sweetness. I thought the 8.6% isn’t as hidden as well as some other beers. Glad to try a beer so few have rated.
3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 drjay44 (2127) - Salida, Colorado, USA - JAN 15, 2008
UPDATED: DEC 12, 2008 Rather too sweet for my palate, but it is consistant to the style and I rated that way. The immediately prior comment is right on for a more detailed discription .................................................. new batch has arrived as of 12/2008. Pours with minimal head, minimal lacing over a clear dark brown body....nose of malts and yeast, molasses, brown sugar....tastes of mild smokiness with finishing mild bitterness. Better to me than the last batch.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Aubrey (3339) - Bellingham, Washington, USA - SEP 8, 2005
In my post-climb state, the deep-burgundy color was mesmerizing. The thickish texture felt good on my gums. Big malts were followed by a slight, curious note of smoke and wood. Syrupy-sweet underbelly gave it some substance. Lesser notes of burnt toast and dark toffee. Flavorful beer with decent balance.

I spoke with the brewer, and I guessed he was using lots of caramel malts, and chocolate malt. Wrong! He claims the method he uses is the one Scottish brewers use. Only 2 row and roasted barley here. The wort is caramelized in the kettle and is hopped to about 35 IBUs.
The head was thick and laced well, the flavors ranged from dried raisins to tobacco, but mostly caramel, toffee, and roasty-chocolate. The body was fat..very substantial, and I was thought it may have been too sweet, but then the alcohol kicked in and warmed my concern away. Very solid...I would love to try a batch aged for a few months longer. I had one 10 oz.
