3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
aroma of smoked woods and malts with solid underlying molasses and créme caramel presence. slightly light on the body, but still medium-full with a nice fruity quality (almost certainly the English yeast strain that was used, but probably complimented by the smoky quality). This is at once a light hand with the smoke, but at the same time much more smoke-forward than much of what you’d find with a lot of the brews that make use of some portion of smoked malts in the grist. the cherrywood smoked malt is a nice choice and a nice touch -- it works well. there’s a little nod of roast, too -- this recipe could be scaled up to robust porter and would still be delicious, if a bit less sessionable. a treat, too, to have such a fine porter in the middle of the summer.

2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
UPDATED: JUL 13, 2010 Draft at the brewery. Pours a thin white head over a clear, dark coppery (SRM 20) body.....nose is light smoke, mild roasted malts......taste early is mild malt, then light dried fruits, primarily cherry, then smoke, last a bit of harsh terpenes.... mouth feel is light to medium, carbonation light to medium. This is a light smoked beer overall, the oak is a bit harsh on the finish, and it is more of a Brown Ale in weight than a Porter. Let it warm to really get it to open up................................................ Again at 2010 Brewers Rendezvous. Abv 6.5% Pours a brown (SRM 25) clear body.....nose is light smoke, bit of vanilla, slight roasted malts (coffee, chocolate)......taste is light smoke, slight malt sweetness (toffee.caramel) finishing with light vanilla. The harsh terpenes were absent in this batch and the smoke was done with a very light hand. My Ratebeer score now is 3.1 total. BJCP 7/3/13/5/7
