SAmpled fresh at brewery: Tapped a dark brown with a tight-pored off white cap, moderate carbonation. Aroma was a cross between porter and stout...had the cocoa-coffee-roasty tones with light grassy hopping. Rather thin for style but serviceable. Big chew on roasted malts in front slightly attenuated hop balance, nicely dry in rhe finish. Uncomplicated straifgt forward black ale with a decent dryness.

341ml bottle from jimmay. Dark pour with a thin tan head that quickly became a small ring of foam. No lacing. Some aroma of molasses and roast malts. Some dark chocolate and coffee flavours and oily mouthfeel. Not bad.

Finally found my notes for this one! Rated January 13, 2010. Shared with blankboy, mabel, jerc, garthicus & gregclow. Deep clear near-opaque ruby-brown with a very small fizzy/foamy tan head. Aroma of burnt treacle, candy necklace, cola syrup and more unburnt treacle - vaguely floral and cocoa-y. The taste is more dryly herbal bitter but oddly even more syrupy than the aroma - not really boozy though (thank goodness). Slick, syrupy mouthfeel, only mildly carbonated, with a bit of grassy bitterness in the finish to cut into the sweetness. Not actually all that bad!

[2694-20100113] 341mL clear bottle. Rich wood charcoal malt aroma. Clear, dark dark brown body with a quick foamy brown head. Rough nutty grain toast malt flavour. Medium-full body. Nice nutty base, drinkable.

Bottle sample thanks to Sammy- Pours a deep cola colour, with a thin mocha cap. Nose hints at freshly melted chocolate, coffee, roasted malts, some hops. Tastes of roasted malts, a bit of char, bitter coffee, lots of chocolate. Creamy, medium-full body, nice chocolate aftertaste. Good. Thanks for sharing Sammy!

Two bottles [341ml each] shared with HogTownHarry, garthicus, jerc, mabel & GregClow -- c/o HogTownHarry. Pours a very dark brown with deep red hues and a small diminishing creamy tan head. Aroma of light roasted malt and some coffee -- meh. Flavour’s watery and dry, with roasted malt and coffee. Average bodied. The best, or close to, Amsterdam beer but only O.K. overall.

Forgot that I had this rating to enter, at the time we were unsure of the name. Thanks to HogTownHarry. Appearance: Quite black with a small tan head. Aroma: Slight grass, cardboard, malt, a little chocolate, cola. Flavour: Slight coffee, wet cardboard, quite a sourness to it, funky. Hmm.

20oz draught
5.0% ABV
I tried this beer on draught on January 29, 2010 at "Smokeless Joe’s" in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The beer poured a dark brown with black hues and a 1" thick light brown. The aroma was roasted malt, molasses, and cherries. The mouthfeel was medium to full bodied with mild carbonation. The flavour was dry cocoa, roasted malt, and sweet fruit with a bitter finish.
