3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 JesseM (940) - Kitchener-Waterloo, - SEP 26, 2007
500ml bottle. Pours a deep, dark red, almost mahogany, with a tiny brown cap. Aromas of coffee, chocolate, but mostly dark roasted malts. The taste is the same as above, with some nice bitterness (coffee-like), then a chocolate malt finish and after-taste, with some touches of the advertised nuttiness. I was a little skeptical going in, but this beer actually comes together nicely and is pretty enjoyable.

473ml can. Dark brown orange beer (Lovibond 25/26). Small head.. Wait, nope. Make that meniscus lace. Aroma of metal and medicine. Tastes kind of bland until you swallow it - strange aftertaste. Not sweet and not bitter, but persistent chemical taste after swallowing. Mediocre palate and medium carbonation.

Just makes it to a 2 finger head. Soapish. Smells kinda like meat kinda buts not a smoked beer. Anywyas it’s a bit waterish kinda tasteing like a cherry cola but different then how a cherry cola really taste. After a while the chocolate and mabye caramel I taste gets stronger but other dark beers show is more cus the tade water/cola aspect to it mutes it a little. heavy bodied. Not best dark beer ever but not worst & am a dark beer fan cheers!

I remember loving this six or seven years ago. After spending some time in England, I still have a soft spot for it. One of my favourite styles, so here we go... Nice and nutty in aroma, colour and taste (hence the name I suppose). Dryish. The lacing could be better. The best I’ve tried so far from this brewer. I guess it’s a little plain but if you like the nut browns it’s got all you need and more.
3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 Metalchopz (1427) - Quebec, CANADA - APR 4, 2012
Originally rated May 2005. This is Amsterdam’s competition brew to KLB Nut Brown (both brewed in Ontario - before Amsterdam bought out KLB). This one poured a dark brown colour with a tanned head and decent retention. The lacing was not much and the carbonation was heavy. Had roasted malt scents. The taste was bitter and roasted with a smooth drier aftertaste. The nut was also pronounced. Full mouthfeel. Not a bad beer, but very close to the Kawartha Lakes Brewery one.

August 17, 2011; 5.0% abv, 355mL bottle, refrigerated, BBD: none, lager glass
Aromas of roasted malts with a sweet toffee, nothing surprising. Deep mahogany pour with a short off white, almost tan head. Pretty low retention with little lace. Tastes as expected. Roasty malts with light toffee sweetness. A bit of light coffee with a sour sort of finish. A really thin body and a weird sort of throat feel, cloying almost. Light carbonation and a thin body lead to fast drinking and not much enjoyment.. Okay. Nice initial flavours but I’m not feeling the substance I expect from an ale.

Canette 473ml.

Deep brown pour with a thinnish head. The aroma has a bit of deep coffeeish character over a decent malty sweetness. Fairly decent full-bodied character. There is a kiss of herbal flavour through the middle of the palate as well. A little bit of soft cocoa character as well. As far as brown ales go, it’s pretty solid stuff.

Typical nut brown ale, tastes of nuts in fact and it is quite dark. Decent taste, overall it is a good offering

On tap a mezes in Toronto. Nothing special about this beer. Might have been a bit maltier

Draught at Snooty Fox Westdale Hamilton. Pours a darkish brown, slight red tinge. Aroma of malt and nut. Tastes also of roasted malt and nut and slightly caramel. Great finish.
