COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This past September Amsterdam teamed up with Toronto Beer Week to offer the grand prize for their Homebrewing Competition. This is it. Kyle Teichert of Egmondville, ON created a spectacular Smoked Porter that is now available in 500 mL bottles in our retail store. We’ve decided to donate all proceeds of this brew to ProAction Cops & Kids - an organization dedicated to providing free programs to reach out to youth in our communities.

Bottle via a trade with Dany a couple weeks back when we went up for the Mondial of ice ciders. Pours a deep black with a monstrously large tan head. A good amount of smoke on the nose, a soft amount of roast. Medium bodied, slightly sweet an first, picking up a nice roast component, and gently gaining smokiness. Finishes with a bit of smoke, and a touch of oxidized malt, minerally at times, and with some soft plum and prune notes.

2011-08-27.Black, nice tan head. Smokey aroma, modest dark malt. 6+ Flavour is less dominated by the smoke, dark malt core is lovely, with the smoke around edges adding to a bitter finish. Smoke grows a lot as it warms up. 6+ Smooth average plus to medium bodied palate 3+ Nice beer but not to my own tastes due to the smoke. Bottle is a couple of months old. Bottle from the brewery via HogTownHarry

In short: A highly roasted porter with a strong smoke presence (wood/pork). Simple but effective.
How: Bottle 500ml. Consumed moderately fresh, 3 months after the beer release. Bottle sent to me by HogtownHarry, thanks a lot Harry
The look: Near black body topped by a medium tan head with medium retention
In long: Nose is very smoky and the smoke character is somewhere between pork and campfire. Taste has plenty of highly roasted malts, not really chocolaty, no really coffee. Just plenty of burnt cereals with a charcoal briquettes character. And with the smoke I got a distinctive smoked bacon/pork/sausage flavor. Not alcohol presence whatsoever. The high roastiness level hides the sweetness. Body actually feels a bit light for an 8% brew. Ashes in water sensation. I would have preferred a smoother carbonation because all those small hard bubbles brought a slight acidity sensation that didn’t fit with the rest of the beer. Needs more complexity in the malt department and the acidic notes need to go, but overall this is a pleasant beer in its simplicity. This is yet another nice Ontario beer, something that almost didn’t exist a few years ago. Is this former beer wasteland on its way to become a good beer province? I have a hard-time believing that, but it might be because I’m a pessimist and I don’t like my life to the fullest, I live my life to the half-emptiest.

500 ml bottle from the brewery. Pours pitch black in colour, with frothy light-tan coloured head. Lots of lacing. Aroma and taste are dominated by smokiness. Not quite smoked salmon, but very smoky. Very cool to take homebrew winner to production environment. Good beer!

Pitch black pour with a thick tan-brown head. The nose is softly smoky with an insistent smokiness and a bit of light chocolate as well. A bit of sweetness, but it’s well balanced with the light salty smoke. Insistently smoky but not over the top - it’s a solid smoked porter.

Bottle from the brewery. Dark ruby-brown with a good sized mocha head. Fantastic aroma - obvious notes of woodsmoke, but balanced by slightly charred malt and a hint of very dark roasted - almost charred - coffee. Body is a bit light, but the flavour makes up for it - the smoke and malt and coffee suggested by the aroma are there, joined by cocoa and licorice, and a hint of herbal hops toward the end. Excellent!

Bottle [500ml]. Pours black with ruby hues and an average size diminishing creamy/frothy light-brown head. Lovely aroma of roasted malt and smoke followed by wood and dark fruit. Flavour of roasted malt, smoke, dark fruit, some salt and a hint of chocolate. Body’s a little lighter then I’d prefer but not too bad. This is very good and the best thing Amsterdam has ever done, maybe they need to get homebrewers to make all of their beers?

Pour super deep dark opaque brown with nice 1.5 finger thick light caramel head. Aroma of wood, hickory smoke and bit of roasty malt. Taste xmas spices, smoke, hickory, malt sweetness, tobacco, and touch of bitter to balance the big malt body. MF medium body decent carb abv hidden well. This is a tasty smoke beer and a nice beer to enjoy on a snowy day.
