Black and opaque, notes of chocolate, coffee, molasses, baking spice. Full bodied, rich and creamy while still retaining balance. Excellent example of the style.

I definitely liked this beer. A very nice stout and not as heavy as many of the other more popular stouts.
3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 Boutip (3971) - Gatineau, Quebec, CANADA - FEB 3, 2013
Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color stout with a rather large dark brown foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of dry roasted malt with some black chocolate and roasted coffee notes. Taste is mix between some roasted coffee notes with light bitter notes of black chocolate with some subtle notes of liquorice and light lactose finish. Body is quite full with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Very drinkable and well balanced though doesn’t necessarily stand out from the pack with limited complexity.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 neongolden (166) - Ontario, CANADA - JAN 2, 2013
(500ml 2012 bottle from LCBO) Poured opaque black with a thin tan head and no lace. Aromas of molasses, roasted malts, coffee, nutty vanilla and a little soy, but not particularly overpowering on the nose. Flavour a little more full. Roasted sweet dark malts, light coffee, milk chocolate, vanilla, wood, a tick sour towards the finish. Finish reasonably dry and bitter with wood and roast. Mouthfeel is not smooth but not very full, carb soft, little alcohol even when warm. Decent flavours, balanced but nothing to stand out from the imperial stout crowd.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Lanchester (175) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - JAN 2, 2013
Pours a jet black with a thin, beige head; recedes to a thin ring around the glass and yields very sparse lacing. Rich, earthy aroma of roasted malts, coffee beans, dark chocolate and molasses...a winning combination. Taste follows aroma with a pleasing and well-balanced bitterness throughout. Full-bodied and smooth on the palate, low carbonation allows for all the flavors to assert themselves. A solid offering, and would certainly add this one to my list of go-to brews for the winter!
4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20 kevinsenn (550) - Waterloo, Ontario, CANADA - DEC 29, 2012
Bottle from LCBO. Pours opaque dark with a thin brown head. Aroma is really roasty, with leather and molasses. Taste is roasty, with bitter dark chocolate, and a bitter finish. A creamy vanilla taste creeps up over time. Smooth palatte, with light carbonation and a full body. This was great stuff - by far the best offering I’ve had from Amsterdam!
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Metalchopz (1744) - Cantley, Quebec, CANADA - DEC 26, 2012
2012 edition, found at the LCBO. Brown bottle with black wax over cap. Pours a real dark brown colour with no highlights found. Average head, creamy mocha, decent retention and a little lace. Beautiful coffee aromas with notes of roasted malt, molasses and nuts. Full-bodied with a nice silky smooth mouthfeel, and no burning at all. The taste is even mild, but with some roasted malt, coffee, cocoa, burnt wood, and hops showing in the end, giving some hints of apples. Goes down too smoothly... dangerous !! Nice to see one of the better Amsterdam products appear in Ottawa stores. Keep ’em coming !

1 finger soapy brown head. Jet black mabye little brown cant see if carbinaded. Smell is chocolate with some light bitterness that reminds me of ipa’s as it warms and a light sourness. Heavy bodied and tase of liquid/syrupy chocolate with a light bitterness that has a light sourness. Filling beer. Not worst or best stout I ever had. Stout fan here Cheer’s!
