(Rating #5431)

pours almost black with a tall and creamy beige head, very good retention and strong lacing. grassy, spicy and resinous - black ipa-like hopping, big chocolate malts and strong bitter coffee notes, very boozy, very peppery and spicy, slightly perfumey, some vegetal staleness in background. moderate carbonation, medium to full body - oily, assertive and harsh piney-grassy-spicy-peppery finish. like an undrinkable imperial black ipa - tasty and hoppy but definitely too boozy for me and not what i’m looking for in a stout.

500ml bottle from the LCBO. Pitch black pour with a huge dark mocha head that leaves nice lace all the way down. Chocolate dominates the nose with some coffee, dark fruits and a hint of pine. Taste is sweet roasted malts leading to a nice bitterness at the end to balance things out. 2013 vintage is 9% but this is well hidden. Medium creamy body with average carbonation and a long finish. The fight with the wax seal was well worth the end result.

Sweet malty nose with dark chocolate, dark fruit notes. But fairly simple, unimpressive mouth. Ok.

Bottle - Vintage 2012 - Bittersweet chocolate, soy and molasses. Oily jet black and a thin beige head. Espresso and bittersweet chocolate and a bitterness that balances sweetness. Very nice.

My Bottom Line:
This spot-on Imperial Stout develops delicious roasted malts with dark chocolate accents, as black pepper and alcohol warmth spice up the finish.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A sheet of foam covers the blackness.
-The malt profile is beautiful from aroma to finish.
-The mouthfeel is rich yet never cloying.
-There are some black bean depths as well in the chewy center of the cereal profile.

Bottle.

*Tempest Imperial Stout* Amsterdam Brewery (which is in Toronto) Pretty much black pout with a ton of brown foamy head. A ton. Looks like sponge toffee. Scent is malty and chocolaty. Mouth is bitter, like a really dark bitter chocolate with a malty sweetness coming in right at the end. The middle is smoked. Aftertaste is boozy. Quite the flavor journey. Okay read the bottle wrong, thought this was 7% and it’s %9, no wonder it’s boozy.
