4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 GregClow (2664) - Toronto, - JAN 13, 2012
Bottle from the brewery. Dark almost-black body with ruby-brown tinges and a large tan head. Aroma of darkly roasted - almost burnt - malt, dark coffee beans, pine resin and grapefruit peel - doesn’t seem like it should work, but it does. Flavour is similar - notes you’d expect from a dark, strong porter and a big IPA meld beautifully, resulting in a flavour is something like a hop-infused dark chocolate bar. Which is a completely awesome idea, now that I think of it...

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 Glouglouburp (4772) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - APR 16, 2012
In short: A roasted Black IPA of superior quality even if a bit ‘dirty’
How: Bottle 500ml, consumed fresh a few weeks after purchase, bottle forwarded to me by blankboy, thanks a lot Paul
The look: Opaque dark brown body topped by a large tan head with medium retention
In long: Nose is medium-high roasted, burnt brownies, roasted nuts, piney hops, some perfumy flower notes. Taste matches the nose, a prominent roastiness, roasted almonds, chocolate chips cookies, piney and herbaceous hops, earthy forest floor, harsh bitterness of medium intensity, fairly dry finish, alcohol bit, something reminiscent of chocolate milk in the comeback. A bit muddy/dirty and a little alcohol bit I could have done without but those are minor flaws when looking at the big picture. This was a satisfying Black IPA. And did you know that if in the middle the night you stand in front of your bedroom mirror and say three times aloud ‘Nightman Cometh’ you can hear the voice of your wife telling you to shut the hell up and go to bed.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 Boutip (3451) - Gatineau, Quebec, CANADA - FEB 27, 2012
Bottle: Poured a dark black color IPA with a nice large off-white foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma consists of dry bitter hops with medium citrus notes mix in with some medium dry roasted malt. Taste is also a mix between some dry roasted malt with notes of light coffee notes which are balanced against some dry and somewhat citrusy hops notes. Body is a bit light with some good carbonation. Enjoyable though a bit below some staple of the style.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 mabel (4405) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - FEB 22, 2012
[4158-20111125] Tap. Fruity wooden barrels aroma has a tinge of wet cut grass. Black body with a quick creamy off-white head. Charcoal bubblegum flavour has an odd melee of craziness. Full body. Lovely but soooo strange at first. (7/3/7/3/15) 3.5+

Bottle [500ml] from the brewery. Pours a very dark brown with an average size semi-lasting frothy tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, some cocoa and lots of leafy hops, it’s quite nice. Flavour follows the aroma with roasted dark malt, leafy hops and cocoa and finishes with a nice roasty bitter finish. Medium bodied. I’m not a big fan of Black IPAs but this one works and is really good, well done.
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Johnsense (281) - - JAN 10, 2012
Black pour, a finger of head. coffee and hoppy citrus aroma. Blast of hops up front, grapefruit, piney, resiny. Roasted malts, black coffee. Medium bodied, carbonation is right for this style. Impressive and leagues better than some of the Black IPA’s i’ve had from brewers with better reputations. Here’s hoping Amsterdam gives it a wide release and does not tinker with the recipe.
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 Sammy (6113) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - JAN 8, 2012
Pours dark and thick. ABove average moutfeel, didn’t feel all that hoppy, still nice drinkability. Thanks Pino for the bottle.

Thanks to HogTownHarry. Appearance: pitch black, small brown head. Aroma: roasty, quite hoppy, pine, cocoa, malt, raisins. Flavour: Hoppy! Nicely pine hopped with herbs, chocolate, cocoa, long lingering leafy hops. Quite nice. When Amsterdam does it right, they do it right.

500 ml bottle from brewery’s retail store. Pours a very dark, opaque brown/black with moderate-sized beige head. Aroma of green, piney hops and some roasty dark malts. Flavour is big on the green, piney hops with a little citrus and a solid roasty malt base that gives off some mild cocoa. Lingering bitterness in finish. Excellent.
